Redistricting Updates

Some of this info has been out for a while, but I was distracted. Here’s the maps, public meetings and a legal opinion.

MAPS
Several neighborhoods got split in the original maps, despite instructions from the committees that

Please note that these maps are also on Legistar (ID 21790)

The maps are also available here.

The easiest place to access information will be on the “Meetings” page on the redistricting website.

PUBLIC MEETINGS
The originally intended to have meetings next week, but changed their mind. Here’s the latest update.

To allow for more time to provide mission critical information requested by the Committee, and to respond to alder and citizen requests for information, Redistricting Committee Chair Mark Richardson and I have decided to push back the three Community Input Meetings. Delaying these meetings will allow the Committee and Alders to have a more informed discussion at subsequent Community Input Meetings. Due to the upcoming Holiday, the Community Input Meetings will most likely not occur for several weeks. We’ll adjust the timeline and meeting schedule at our next Committee meeting.

As for the next Committee Meeting, we would like to hold a Redistricting Committee meeting (in lieu of the Community Input Meetings) on Tuesday, April 12 at 5:30 pm in Room 300 of the Madison Municipal Building. There is a regularly-scheduled Redistricting Committee meeting on Wednesday, April 27 at 5:30 pm. We’ll continue to work on scheduling a Common Council briefing on redistricting during this same week (the week of April 25).

LEGAL OPINION
I find the timing of this, the day after the election, somewhat suspicious. I wonder if the opinion would have been different with a different election result? This is, by the way, the right decision about what happens if as a result of redistricting 2 sitting alders end up in the same district and one district had no representative. The city attorney originally said that they would have to have an election to fill the vacancy, but didn’t indicate who would have to leave office. He has since changed his mind and explains in this memo.
