Who Pays to Bury Poor People?

The county used to have a fund, it became a state function in last year’s budget, but seems like that is not working out so well. Check this out.

MUM is working to help a family raise the funds needed to cover the funeral and burial costs for _____________ who died nearly two weeks ago. As many of you know, if you were not receiving Medical Assistance at the time of your death you are not eligible to receive the assistance through the state with funeral and burial expenses.

The family is working with __________ Funeral home, I have talked with the Medical Examiner in terms of exploring assistance possibilities, they are non-existent for this family. We are trying to cover the remaining $2,500 in expenses. The family has tapped their resources and we want to make sure that the funeral, scheduled for Friday, happens and is not delayed, the family has already waited nearly two weeks just to claim the body. ZZZZ was not receiving MA when ZZZZZ died but was unemployed due to ZZZZ poor health.

If you or your congregation are able to make a donation you can send it to MUM, for the DM funeral fund. Anything over $2,500 we will hold in a restricted fund to help with other funerals for other individuals who may not qualify for the indigent burial fund assistance.

If you are going to make a donation and can let me know the amount then we will, if we’re close to the $2,500 we will go ahead and commit to Ryan to cover the costs. __________ has been working with the family and has already written off $2,500 in cost to help the family out.

I really don’t have anything to say to follow that up. It’s kind of stunning to think about.

While I’m at it, here’s a fundraiser you might think about attending, because Madison Urban Ministry often fills in so many of these Human Services gaps – and they just keep increasing and we really need them to stay strong to be able to do this work.

Here’s their note:

Please share, sponsor and/or attend our one and only fundraiser of the year. As resources are tightening we need your support more than ever. Our youth programs, Mentoring, Family and Reading Connections receive no governmental dollars or United Way dollars, they are supported through individual, congregational and foundation support. Your support of our fundraiser will help provide transporation for children who have an incarcerated mom, books and DVD’s for moms who are in prison to record themselves reading books to their kids, the book, DVD and a note from mom are sent to their children. Your support of our fundraiser will help provide community based volunteer mentoring for children who have an incarcerated parent. Sponosorships and tickets may be ordered through our website, simply click on the donate button and for tickets or sponsorship note it in the comment section.

For those of you who know me you know I don’t have a religious bone in my body so this may seem kind of odd coming from me, but I greatly value the work this organization does and highly respect their staff and I urge your support regardless of religious beliefs! 🙂 We need them to do the work they are doing now more than ever!
