About 40 people kicked off City Committees Last Night . . .

for failure to fill out their statement of interest forms. Not a word was said. Not a question asked. So, here’s the people who are very likely to be surprised since I didn’t hear them being reminded at the city committees I attended or watched on TV. I’m not sure they followed all the steps in the process this year.
The ordinance says this:

3.35(9) (d) Annual Filing. Each person required to file the Statement shall annually file an updated Statement with the Clerk no later than the first Tuesday in January of each year, except that this provision shall not apply to candidates for elected office who have filed the Statement with their nomination papers pursuant to subdivision (9)(c) of this section.

and
Sec. 3.35(9)(i)3.

The Clerk shall report to the Common Council the name of any member of any board, committee, commission, subcommittee or ad hoc committee who has not filed the Statement within 10 days of the mailing of the Clerk’s notice. A copy of the report shall be sent to the appropriate staff of the body on which the member serves. The Common Council shall, at the second meeting after receipt of the Clerk’s notice, revoke the appointment of any such member who has not filed the required disclosure statement by the time of such Council meeting.

The agenda last night said this:

71. 25065 Report dated January 17, 2012 re: Board, Committee, Commission, Ad Hoc Committee & Subcommittee Members who have not filed the Statement of Interests Form.
Legislative History
1/12/12 Clerk’s Office Referred for Introduction
Recommended to Common Council to accept 2-7-2012

1/17/12 COMMON COUNCIL Refer to a future Meeting to Accept to the COMMON COUNCIL

Accept 2-7-2012.

And here are the people, tho some are off the committees or think the committees aren’t meeting or may not have to file – I will not that when I see ones that seem to apply:
Nicole Anderson – Community Services Committee and Early Childhood Care and Education Committee
Robert Artis – Allied Area Task Force
Gladis Benevides – Madison Cultural Arts District Board (Not sure this matters)
James Berkenstadt – Transport 2020 Implementation Task Force (may not be meeting)
Mary Berryman Agard – Joint Southeast Campus Area Committee
Zach Brandon – Capital Area Regional Planning Commission (not sure he has to file, not a city committee)
Evelyn Burns – Senior Citizens Advisory Committee
Sheri Carter – Zoning Code Rewrite Advisory Committee
Melvin Casto – Facilities Programs and Fees Subcommittee
Eric Cobb – Board of Public Works
John DeLamater – Transport 2020 Implementation Task Force (may not be meeting)
Matthew Early – Sweatfree Purchases Committee
Patty Elson – Madison Arts Commission and North Pinckney Street Plaza Selection Committee
Alice Fike – Community Development Authority
Ricardo Gonzalez – Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center Board
Eric Hands – ETHICS BOARD!!!!!!!!!!
Stephen Hiniker – Transport 2020 Implementation Task Force (may not be meeting)
Michael Johnson – Affirmative Action, MLK Humanitarian Award Committee
Jesse Kaysen – Transport 2020 Implementation Task Force (nay not be meeting)
Donald Knapp – Golf Subcommittee
Edward Linville – Cultural Plan Steering Committee
Ronald Luskin – Downtown Coordinating Committee
Greg Markle – Madison Public Library Board
Austin McClendon – Vending Oversight
Michelle Miller – Pest Management Advisory Committee
Mark Neidinger – Zoning Board of Appeals
Shirley Price-Marcus – Senior Center Board of Directors
Bradford Ricker – Joint West Campus Area Committee
Ruth Ann Schoer – Madison Development Corporation Board
Stephen Small – Community Services (no longer on the committee)
Dan Smith – Golf Subcommittee
Laura Sorensen – Affirmative Action Commission
De’Kendrea Stamps – Community Services Commission
Craig Stanley – Zoning Code Rewrite Advisory Committee
Ken Streit – Transit and Parking Commission, Parking Strategic Plan committee, State St. Design Project
Jason Stringer – Housing
Paul VanRooy – Community Services, Senior Citizens Advisory and Warner Park Community Recreation Center and maybe NOrth Mendota Parkway Implementation Committee
David Wandel – Community Services and MLK Humanitarian Award
Larry Warman – Joint Southeast Campus
Russ Whitesel – Community Development Block Grant
Chris Williamson – Pest Management Advisory Committee

The embarrassing part is the ex-alders (Markle and VanRooy), ex-county board supervisor (Shoer) and the ethics board people on the list. And it looks like Community Development Division wins the award for the most people not appointed to the committees they staff (Community Services, CDBG, Seniors, Early Childhood). The Community Services Committee is the big loser, they aren’t going to get quorum with this many vacancies.

Better add this to the alder job description – to make sure to remind their committee members to get these in. 40 people is a lot of people to replace.
