Thurs. – MLK Day Round Up

Oops, I thought I posted this before I left the house at 8:30 . . .

You’d think 5 days of news would be quite the challenge but besides the Packers and MLK day, there’s not really that much.

GENERAL
Porchlight fire.
Cause still under investigation, 2 of 3 out of hospital, 10 staying at nearby church. I think this is kinda odd. Should alders be fundraising for non-profits? If so, could I get an alder to urge people to Support TRC on their blog? I would think not.

Hockey vs. Basketball
Has hospitality industry worried.

Give ’em the Boot!
No, seriously, we need boots for the homeless. Give ’em your boots!

Paintball attack
Um, its not just the far east side, but also Jenny St. Are the police unaware, or just the reporters? Perhaps they just drew too many conclusions from this?

Rural Homelessness on the Rise
Anyone surprised? Also, wish they would do these stories when the shelters are really full in August as well. People are homeless all year round.

Tim Bruer has a job!
You hardly ever see him in the paper for his job – good to see! Bad that people can pay to heat their homes. Energy Services helps sooooo many people in Wisconsin, their service is invaluable.

CITY
Foul Play in Sale of James Madison Park Houses? The only foul play is the hack job done by the reporter. Sorry Dean, the real story lies in the scoring of the proposals, which were so absurd by Maniaci and Clausius they were over-ridden by the saner members of the committee. Of course, he would know that if he attended the meeting instead of writing about it a week later. Sigh . . . we need more reporters so they can attend meetings and report the real news!!!! Not the sppon-fed spin. I hate the state of media in this town, especially since Dean is a good reporter if he gets to do his job!

WHAT?!
To read this, you’d think we have an abundance of grocery stores in Madison. And Fitchburg. To talk to residents who have transportation issues and live in food desserts, you hear quite the different story. All they want is fresh fruits and vegetables that don’t cost a fortune. Once again, a tale of two Madison’s. The slick business presentation to the newspaper vs. what those living in a very different Madison have to put up with. Getting . . . more . . . frustrated . . . this morning.

Caffeinated Politics Agrees – No Liquor License
Community Center that serves high risk kids not appropriate place for alcohol. Cap Times thinks differently.

Madison’s new-ish Preservation Planner talks saving houses
Making sense of historic preservation. i.e. its not a museum.

Mayor happy with snow removal
KONKEL NOT! Ok, this is deserving of its own post, but really, 5 inches of snow and they only plowed to the curb one side of our streets downtown – so you try parallel parking your car on a hill in 5 inches of snow! This sucks – bad way to start the winter. The city says if there is more than 3 inches of snow, they call a snow emergency, but they didn’t – so now if they do call a snow emergency, why would anyone know or pay attention. And its all the more absurd since they just spent all that money to put up all those signs about snow emergencies on every block! We are just STUPID about snow in this city. Clear, consistent rules would really, really help.

Oops, too much competition?
Hovde drops plans for E Washington development. I suppose once Ale Asylum backed out that was a huge tenant missing for the project.

Council of Creeps?
What’s that they say about people in glass houses? It was only a matter of time before some of this started to come out . . . I might expect more before this is all over. I’m glad they outed Tim Bruer and Chris Schmidt.

City finally getting around to job creation?
Still don’t know what they want to do. Seems so silly. By the way, the person isn’t getting paid $32K per year, they are getting paid $32K in 2012 when they start in July, so over $60K per year is budgeted for them. This sentence sounded odd.

The job will pay $32,821 a year, starting in July.

Mayor’s hip surgery delayed
That’s too bad, its painful to see him in pain.

2 women, 4 men get promotions
Madison Fire Department switcheroo continues.

COUNTY
D.A.’s office didn’t follow open records law? Well, the settled and we will never know, I guess. Can they do that? Isn’t that a violation of open records law?

SCHOOLS
Cut union teachers, give administrators raises? Yeah, that could be a problem.

Drug dogs find no drugs?
First sweep of the schools and they find just odors? And they notified people’s parents? Do we need new drug dogs? Or do the kids just keep the drugs on them instead of in their lockers?

Madison Prep Re-vote
Colassal waste of everyone’s time, energy and effort while the real issues go unaddressed. And now, losing supporters by using the “race card”?
