Isthmus Flood Prevention Coalition

PRESS RELEASE — January 24, 2019
Isthmus Flood Prevention Coalition to Monitor County Lake Levels Task Force Meetings in February & March 2019 That Will Recommend How to Prevent Floods from Yahara Lakes

FROM:
● Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association (TLNA)
● Marquette Neighborhood Association (MNA)
● Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara Neighborhood Association (SASY)

CONTACT: Isthmus Flood Prevention Coalition
(Shaun Abshere, 608-320-5229; shaun.abshere@gmail.com)

After Summer 2018’s unprecedented flooding in the Yahara River watershed, concerned residents of Madison’s Isthmus neighborhood associations met to discuss how to act together to prevent similar floods in the future. They formed the Isthmus Flood Prevention Coalition to gather, educate and focus concerned neighbors on the issues and actions that Dane County and the City of Madison officials will consider during 2019 and beyond.

The Coalition now is following and reporting about the progress of efforts initiated in November 2018 by the Dane County Board of Supervisors that will address four concerns:
● Manage our lake levels to reduce flooding from ever-increasing stormwater runoff
● Increase the volume of water leaving the Yahara River system
● Reduce stormwater runoff volumes into the chain of lakes through increased infiltration
● Manage and reduce stormwater runoff from impervious man-made surfaces in the watershed

The Coalition will focus on the 16-member “Yahara Chain of Lakes – Lake Levels Task Force” appointed in December that will meet six times in February and March 2019 to review technical analyses and develop policy recommendations for these four concerns. The task force will deliver its report to the Dane County Board in April 2019.

The six task force meetings are open to the public, with agenda and minutes to be published online at Dane County’s LegiStar Calendar ( https://dane.legistar.com/Calendar ). The Lake Levels Task Force will meet according to this schedule:

February 4 @ 5 pm — 5201 Fen Oak Drive – Room A/B, Madison
February 11 @ 6 pm — City-County Building – Room 354, Madison
February 18 @ 5 pm — 5201 Fen Oak Drive – Room A/B, Madison
March 5 @ 5 pm — 5201 Fen Oak Drive – Room A/B, Madison
March 18 @ 5 pm — City-County Building – Room 351, Madison
April 1 @ 6pm — City-County Building – Room 354, Madison

The Isthmus Flood Prevention Coalition urges our neighbors, concerned citizens and news media to keep informed about the Lake Levels Task Force’s discussion and recommendations and to express your views during February and March.

Resident Survey on Spending Housing and Community Development Dollars

Dear City of Madison and Dane County Residents:

The City of Madison and Dane County are seeking input on where to focus the housing and community development funds our local government will receive during the next five years (2020-2024). The City and County are starting a process called the Consolidated Plan, which will determine how the funds will be spent.

Funding is currently focused on four general areas: Affordable Housing, Economic/Business Development, Neighborhoods, and Access to Resources. Activities must generally benefit low- and moderate-income persons. Citizen participation is a vital step in determining community needs, and your input will assist us in determining where we should focus our efforts.

This survey is directed toward residents and families of Madison and Dane County, should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Please click on the link provided to participate in our survey:
English: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MadisonDaneCoCommunity
Spanish: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/comunidaddeMadison
Please contact Ethan Tabakin with the City of Madison Community Development Division if you would like paper copies of this survey.

We apologize for duplicate posts but please distribute this widely to residents. Thank you in advance for your participation!
