Rally Against Fascism!

RALLY: UNITED AGAINST FASCISM!

On Saturday January 12th at 11:30 AM there will be a rally against fascism.

The rally will take place in Madison Wisconsin, at the top of State Street, (30 on the square). It is across the street from the capitol.

The right wing fascist group the 3% United Patriots have announced their intention to be on the capitol steps at noon.

We are rallying to show that the vast majority of our fellow Wisconsinites support a society where all are respected and condemn those who preach hate and division. The rally has been called by a large coalition of community groups. Mayor Paul Soglin indicates that he will join us.

The 3% United Patriots, a right wing organization, is an armed militia group organizing vigilante squads on the Mexican US Border. No decent person supports vigilantism and our rally will demonstrate to all that such actions are abhorrent to our fellow Wisconsinites.

We are rallying against Fascism. Fascism always means racism, homophobia, misogyny and attacks on unions. The vast majority of us reject those ideas and we will demonstrate that Saturday, January 12th at 1130 AM at 30 on the Square in downtown Madison.

Please see the attached leaflet.

Beacon open on cold weather days
Um, this isn’t much so . . . cold weather days means below 20 degrees or if they decides to declare a weather day for extreme heat, blizzards, etc.

The Beacon is currently open and will continue to open early on cold weather days.

WIC Program during government shutdown

The Public Health Madison & Dane County Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program continues to operate despite the federal government shutdown. WIC is a federally funded nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new mothers, infants and young children eat well, learn about nutrition and stay healthy. Should the continuation of the federal government shutdown threaten WIC operations, clients will be given advance notice of the impact.

Madison and Dane County’s program operates Monday-Friday and provides nutritional food benefits, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referral services. In addition, benefits will continue to be able to be redeemed at local vendors.

“In 2018, we served approximately 8000 participants at our WIC clinics. This program is vital to the health of local families and it’s important that everyone knows we are still providing services,” says Sue Marshall, WIC Supervisor.

For more information about WIC or to check eligibility, call 608-267-1111 or visit the Public Health Madison & Dane County website.

Please be sure to join over 1,800 community members by sharing your input through the online survey at www.madisonbrt.com.

Affordable Housing Option for Single Women

My name is Rachel Hernandez, and I am the Residence Counselor at the YWCA. We are currently accepting applications for single women SRO’s with rental units starting at $410.00. Please direct and assist applicants in completing and submitting a housing application. Our housing application can be found on our website and is attached to this e-mail. Once an application is received, staff will review it for completeness and call applicants back to schedule interviews. Interviews will be scheduled in the order the applications are received and based upon intake availability. Applications will be processed following an intake interview. Interviews will not be set up for individuals who have not submitted an application or for incomplete applications.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when referring potential applicants:
-The past two years of housing history must be listed with contact information. If an applicant was staying at a shelter or with family members/friends, this will be used as housing history, and we will only contact that specific individual. If there are large gaps in the past two years of housing history, the applicant, along with a case manager, should submit letters explaining their specific circumstances.
-Applicants must have an income to be considered for tenancy.
-Evictions are not grounds for automatic denial, but if applicants owe previous landlords, they must create a payment plan and make payments before they become eligible for housing.
-Contact information must be left on application (phone number and/or email, case managers phone number and/or email) so that staff can reach the applicant. If contact information changes, please call to update; calls should be directed to Rachel Hernandez
-Applicants must be able to live cooperatively and share spaces with neighbors
– First month’s rent (can be pro-rated) and security deposit (value of monthly rent) is due at lease signing. Payment plans for security deposit are available.

If you have additional questions please feel free to contact me via e-mail. This is the easiest way to get in contact with me.

Counter March For Life!

March for Life Wisconsin is holding a march at the capitol in January. The threat to abortion rights is a threat to our community and our health. Abortion should be accessible to all. Join Madison Abortion Defense in reminding these folks that Madison is a pro-choice town and their presence is not welcome here. They intend to pressure lawmakers to bend to their anti-woman, anti-family, anti-human rights agenda. Let’s make sure our voices are heard instead! With Scott Walker out of office, we won’t just fight to defend abortion rights. We will fight to repair the damage done during the Walker administration and expand abortion access in Wisconsin.

Bring a sign, your voice, and a friend!

Tenant Resource Center Training Videos

With the 2018 EOP grant, Tenant Resource Center produced excellent housing training videos designed for helping professionals.

The videos are available on Youtube and the link can be found here: http://www.tenantresourcecenter.org/hsc

Here are the training topics:
· Housing law for case managers and services providers: tenant-landlord law & application process (21 minutes)
· Understanding differences in low-income housing: subsidized housing, section 8 vouchers, and affordable housing (18 minutes)
· The real life housing search (45 minutes)

These were designed for homeless services providers, but feel free to share with other professionals who may benefit.

If you have questions after watching the videos, you can contact Megan Osowski (megan@tenantresourcecenter.org ).
