LAKE LOOP CHIP SEALING

A street with a "Road Work Ahead" sign

Chip sealing will occur on portions of the Lake Loop and parallel streets this week. Impacted streets include Lakeland Avenue from Divison Street to the Olbrich Park Path (Welch Street) and Oakridge Avenue from Division Street to Atwood Avenue. Chip sealing involves applying a layer of gravel to the street to help preserve the pavement. Loose gravel can be slippery for bicyclists. People bicycling should use alternate routes or ride on the sidewalk while work is occurring, and should use caution when riding on chip sealed streets for the next few weeks. If riding on the sidewalk, bicyclists must always yield to pedestrians.

Since 1985, the United States has celebrated Park and Recreation Month in July to promote the importance parks and recreation have in our health and well-being.Throughout the month, we’re celebrating the many ways parks and recreation reveals the power of what connects us:

  • The Power of Connection: parks and recreation is where relationships grow, cultures meet and communities bond
  • The Power of Play: from playgrounds to programs to youth sports, play fuels creativity, joy and lifelong learning
  • The Power of Community: public spaces offer room for everyone to gather, celebrate and heal
  • The Power of Nature: nature restores and inspires us, and parks ensure everyone can access its benefits
  • The Power of Belonging: welcoming parks and programs make every person feel valued
  • The Power of Well-Being: parks and recreation advances health, resilience and shared community benefits

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSLETTER

Neighborhood Grant Showcase, Volunteer for Ride the Drive, Learn Recycling Best Practices and More

Neighborhood Grant Showcase

Since 1999, the Planning Division’s Neighborhood Grant Program has funded approximately 400 projects across Madison. The City provides the funding, but its neighbors coming together and building community who make projects a reality. A big thank you to everyone who has participated over the years in making their neighborhoods wonderful places to be! In 2025, neighborhoods completed 7 projects, some of which are showcased below. Other 2025 projects will be featured in an upcoming newsletter.

  • Allied Wellness Center’s Community Learning Garden delivered broad community benefits with hands-on education, inclusive engagement, and improved food access. Residents of all ages participated throughout the 2025 growing season in bilingual, culturally inclusive learning experiences focused on gardening, sustainability, food preparation, and environmental awareness, all supported by bi-weekly workshops in partnership with ASE Cooperative.

  • Eastmorland Community Center (ECC) hosted a Building Farewell Celebration to say goodbye to their existing space in anticipation of a new building. ECC hired professional artists who painted murals on the soon to be demolished walls and created prints that could be kept as mementos. One of the artists also created a wind phone where community members could process feelings by calling and speaking to lost loved ones or the building itself. These installations will have a place in the new building.

Ride the Driv at Edward Klief Park

Ride the Drive is a free community event that opens select Madison streets to people for biking, walking, strolling, rolling, and enjoying all-ages activities at three hubs and along the route. Volunteers help create a safe, welcoming experience by supporting intersections, information areas, setup, cleanup, and overall event flow. At this point, intersection guide volunteers are especially helpful as we work to support the full route.

How to Sign Up:

  1. Click Browse Opportunities and Register Online.
  2. Choose the role and shift that work best for you.
  3. Register online and watch for your email confirmation.
  4. Report to your assigned location and time on Sunday, August 9.

Streets Division
  • Help Your Neighbors Recycle Better: Your last chance to take the Recycle Better course this year is coming up this month! You can sign up to take this class taught by Sustain Dane with the Streets Division. You can learn more about the class and sign up to take it on the Sustain Dane website. If you have questions about the class or concerns the $15 cost charged by Sustain Dane, please email Sam Wordette of Sustain Dane.
  • Where Are Your Food Scraps Going?: The city has collected over 10,000 pounds of food scraps at neighborhood farmers’ markets this year for composting. And more still from the Streets Division drop-off sites. So – what are you doing with your veggie and fruit scraps?  Sending them ot the landfill? Well, why not compost them! There are 10 free sites around the city – including some very close to you (including our newest market site off Cottage Grove Rd.)
  • Choose ReUse the Moving Season: A lot of people move from their homes and apartments this time of year. Remember to donate your usable items rather than just throwing them out. We have a lot of great options here in Madison. We list several of them on the Streets Division website.
  • Fireworks Disposal?: Take them to Dane County Clean Sweep. All of your hazardous household waste, like chemicals, poisons, and yes, even fireworks and ammo, goes to Clean Sweep.
  • What do you do with…: We have a tool to help you out. It’s our online Recyclopedia.  You can search for the answers on that page. This simple tool is something we’ve had a little more than a year. All of the answers in here were entered by Streets Division staff, so it’s local advice not AI-generated nonsense pulled from questionable areas of the internet.
  • Take the Recycling Survey:  If you have time, please fill out the brief recycling survey on our website. We want to be able to help people recycle better, so we’re asking people what they would like to see. The survey is available on the Streets Division website.

JOHN NOLEN CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Latest Update 7/10/2026

General Project Information

The John Nolen Drive project includes reconstructing John Nolen Drive and six bridges that span the causeway. New curb and gutter with a raised median separating northbound and southbound traffic will narrow traffic lanes to calm high traffic speeds. The Capital City Trail will be moved further from the roadway with the addition of three new bridge structures, increasing pedestrian safety and greenspace along the corridor. The trail will also be widened, increasing the capacity of the trail, with separate paths for bikes and foot traffic.

Project Schedule

  • The project will transition to Stage 3 the week of 7/13/2026
  • Anticipated Stage 3 Completion: Late-Spring 2027

Current Stage / Traffic Impacts

***Capital City Trail detour*** – anticipated to begin 7/14/2026

The Capital City Trail will be closed between S Broom St and E Lakeside St when the project advances to the next stage of construction. A signed detour will direct path users around Monona Bay using a combination of Wingra Creek Path, bike boulevards and Brittingham Park Path. There is no pedestrian access across the causeway and path users should avoid entering the active construction zone.

View the detour map.

Parking Structure Inspection

In cooperation with the Department of Administration, the southbound lane closure leading into the work zone on John Nolen Drive has been temporarily moved to the north. Once structure repairs have been completed, the closure will be repositioned back to its original location under the Monona Terrace parking structure

Stage 3

Work entails reconstructing northbound John Nolen Drive, reconstructing three bridges on the causeway, building three new bike/pedestrian bridges, shoreline revetment, biofilter basins, and reconstructing the Capital City Trail between E Lakeside St and S Broom St.

  • John Nolen Dr restricted to one lane each direction on newly constructed southbound lanes.
  • Capital City Trail detoured around Monona Bay

View Stage 3 Traffic Change.(opens in a new window)PDF

S Broom St intersection

Roadway work is complete. Remaining work entails installing permanent lighting and signals, stamped concrete in medians, and grass restoration.

Broom St is open and restricted to one lane each direction between W Wilson St and John Nolen Dr. Signs and markings have been installed to direct motorists where to stop. Motorists are reminded to avoid blocking the bike/pedestrian crossing.

North Shore Dr intersection

Work entails reconstructing outbound/eastbound lanes of North Shore.

  • North Shore Dr (full closure) closed between S Bedford St and John Nolen Dr
  • The bike/pedestrian crossing of John Nolen Dr at North Shore Dr has been removed. Detour and wayfinding signs have been installed which direct bike and pedestrian traffic to use the new Brittingham Park path between S Bedford St and S Broom St.
  • Railroad crossing work performed by others under contract with WSOR will also occur. During this work, bike and pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the Wilson St path.

Upcoming Work/ Traffic Impacts

Stage 3 traffic switch

This work will occur during the overnight hours starting late Monday, July13 and is anticipated to be complete Tuesday morning, July 14.

Work Week of 7/13/26

  • Pavement marking/preparation for traffic switch
  • Traffic switch onto new southbound lanes
  • Erosion control installation
  • Pavement removal of old northbound lanes
  • North Bridge
    • Parapet removal

Work Week of 7/20/26

  • North bridge
    • Deck and girder removal
  • South bridge
    • Parapet removal
  • Pavement removals of old northbound lanes
  • Storm sewer/box culvert installation

Motorist Impacts ***starting Tuesday, July 14***

  • All vehicles on John Nolen Dr use new southbound lanes between Lakeside St and the Monona Terrace.
    • Both directions of traffic are reduced to one lane prior to entering the active work zone.
    • Signs have been installed on both end of the project to provide direction on where to “zipper merge”. Motorists should utilize all lanes and avoid early merging. More information can be found here:  Wisconsin Department of Transportation Zipper Merge(external)

Pedestrian/Bike Impacts

The John Nolen Dr crossing at North Shore Dr has been removed from service until the completion of the project. The new Brittingham Park path between S Broom St and S Bedford St is open. Bike and pedestrian traffic should access this path at the S Broom St/John Nolen Dr crossing and follow the detour signs through the pedestrian barricade.

Pedestrians and bicyclists should avoid entering areas with active construction.

The Capital City Trail between S Bedford St and E Lakeside St has been removed from service until the completion of the project. Cyclists are encouraged to dismount from their bikes when crossing active construction zones near S Broom St.

Waterway Impacts

A navigable channel will be open for the duration of the project under the middle set of bridges. The channel has red and green buoys to aid navigation and regulatory buoys to delineate hazards. No other channels will be open and waterway users should avoid entering areas with active construction

Please be alert when traveling along the John Nolen Drive corridor. Please note that some work is dependent on weather and may be subject to change. Thank you in advance for your patience throughout this project.
