Mifflin Hangover Monday Morning Round Up

Wow – some folks in this town must have really been hurting on Sunday judging by how drunk they were Saturday afternoon.

NOTHING TO SEE HERE
Or here. (check out the quotes from these students, amazing.) Or here. Just a rape, a collapsed porch, a woman hospitalized from being hit by a picture frame, detox full by early in the evening, glass bottles thrown at officers, more tickets issued than previous years by early in the evening, ambulances kept busy . . . but hey, we have a sponsor, so nothing else matters, it was a success. I’d like to see the police reports after a full evening downtown, including the entire downtown, not just the spin the Mayor wants to see. I think the priorities are a little off.

STILL WAITING FOR SOME RESULTS
Is this it? This is what we get out of the bike trip that was supposed to benefit us? Where’s the WOW! Where is the big aha! Just doing what we’ve already suggested doing doesn’t seem like enough. Where is the benefit to the city? The Daily Cardinal has an opinion on it.

HAVE THE WEST-SIDERS TAKEN OVER?
Is this your Madison?

West-side power brokers want to pretend they’re living in Manhattan, with high-rise condos, Broadway shows, gourmet groceries and elegant, overpriced hotels. I expect our new improved downtown library to have an entrance flanked by lion statues. We already saw a return of the Statue of Liberty on the lake this past winter. Maybe we can drop a lighted disco ball from the top of the State Capitol on New Year’s Eve, too.

Interesting observations, you should take a look at the whole article. I tend to think that its not really west-siders but downtown business interests that in many cases, don’t even live in the city.

OH, THAT NAN CHANEY
Another nice tribute to an amazing woman. More here. She’d probably be embarrassed to be/modest about getting this much, well deserved attention.

LAWYER FOR $80/HOUR IS A BARGAIN!
Can you believe they actually get paid $40/hour? Yeah, that’s why I quit being an attorney and taking those cases, you can’t make money that way and still pay the rent and other expenses. I was pretty shocked they’re still getting paid $40 an hour because that is what I got paid 15 years ago.

TELL POCAN YOU WANT . . .
A Penny for Kids.

NOT ENOUGH LOW-INCOME BUS PASSES
Anyone surprised? 300 a month isn’t near enough.

There’s more, I’m sure, but I ran out of time, will include some extra stuff tomorrow.
