Re: City of Madison Body Worn Video Committee Update

The following memo provides you with a brief update on the City of Madison resolution establishing the Body Worn Video ad hoc committee.

On May 20, 2015, the City of Madison finalized the contract with YWCA as the ad hoc project manager. One requirement of the contract is to initiate engagement with the broader and diverse community on the topic of policing and specifically body cameras. The YWCA has begun their engagement sessions and has completed three focus groups with the following organizations, Brotherhood, YWCA Third St. and Unidos (Domestic Violence). In the upcoming weeks, they have scheduled focus groups with Nehemiah, Man up, Latino Youth Group, UTI Spanish speaking adult group and Madison Urban Ministries (MUM).

The YWCA has reached out to the following organizations to schedule focus groups: 100 Black Men, Young Gifted and Black (YGB), Urban League, GSAFE and Alianza Latina.

The YWCA started their engagement with our internal city employees beginning with our committee representatives from Fire Department, Madison Police Department, Department of Civil Rights and IT.

The Body Worn Video committee will begin meeting at the end of June. We received well qualified candidates who expressed interest in serving on this committee. I encourage your support of the YWCA, city staff and volunteers as they work to accomplish the mission set forth in the resolution. The committee consists of the following members;

Percy Brown, Equal Opportunities Commissioner
Veronica Lazo, Unidos against Domestic Violence
Maria Dary, LGBTQ representative
Anthony Cooper, Nehemiah
Tom Brown, Urban League of Greater Madison
Kristen Roman, Madison Police Department
Laura Laurenzi, Madison Fire Department
Rich Beadles, Information Technology
Lucia Nunez, Department of Civil Rights

We expect to have another update for you by the end of July on the status of their work. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
