Busy Day Round Up

Lots going on tonight, SJC 10th Birthday Party at Olbrich, Immigration Task Force Public Hearing, and What’s going to happen to City Channel with the loss of funding, where will the quarter of a million dollars come from? Or won’t it.

THE GEESE HAVE BEEN SAVED!
Yes, really this time. It’s official. And unanimous.

ERDMAN CENTER
Parking and asphalt, asphalt and parking.

WOW! IT FINALLY HAPPENED!
This bill has been introduced several time, but it finally passed. It’s super good news for housing counselors at the Tenant Resource Center, because nothing sucks more than to tell a grieving family member that the lease continues even after someone dies. Now, it will be limited to 60 days. That’s an improvement!

TEMPE HOME RESIDENT NOT EVICTED
I’ll save you the rant, but she left voluntarily. Eviction is a court process where a judge determines someone must leave – for the record. And, evictions impact the poor in dramatic ways, particularly people of color.

9% TAX HIKE APPROVED
Hearing June 9th. Did you know the average home would pay about $350 per year to support MATC? It will increase $25 this year with the 9% increase.

STATE JOURNAL WRONGFULLY ATTACKS SCHOOL SECRECY AGAIN
My understanding, the way it was explained to me, is that the schools are following the law, not a school policy. They should be urging a change in the law, not ripping the schools again. No attack on Verona over the pot cookie, they’re secretive too.

BAD TIME TO BE A MENTAL HEALTH PATIENT
Even worse in Milwaukee county, especially if you’re a woman and don’t like being sexually assaulted, but don’t worry, its a trade off.

MADISON’S ECONOMY 9TH IN THE NATION
Not bad. Do we really need to spend $16M in TIF to help improve it, and if so, for what, what will we gain?

ANOTHER MADISON OFFICE CLOSING
First Grant Thornton, now Metavante. Despite the good news above, I find this interesting. The first possibly spurred on by our economic development of the Edgewater. This one is connected to the financial industry that got all the bail outs.

TIF NOT SUCH A GOOD DEAL THESE DAYS
New laws had to be passed to allow more time to pay them back. Now is a time for caution, not one of the biggest TIFs in Madison’s history.

GOOD TIME TO GET OUT
Long time Anchor Bank leader leaves. Can you blame him for not sticking around?

WHEN DOES THE SHERIFF CALL ICE
This explanation is not any better than the others I have heard. The explanation seems to shift and change and its hard to nail down.

ANNOYED
So, the Landmarks meeting from Monday and the Plan Commission meeting from Monday are both up on the website, but the one that went tile nearly 2 am, the one that most people want to watch, still not up. I hope it becomes available today.

IMMIGRATION TASK FORCE MEETING TONIGHT
I’ll be at the 10th Anniversary of the Social Justice Center at Olbrich and then have a board meeting, but I think this is really important too:

The Dane County Board’s Immigration Task Force is culminating its work at this time and will soon issue a report with recommendations to the county board. The task force is inviting the public to comment on the recommendations before they are finalized. Public comments will be taken at the Task Force’s next meeting which will be held on May 13, 6:30-8:30 in Room 210 of the City County Building, 210 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. Minutes from the last meeting, which include a draft report and recommendations will be available soon at http://www.countyofdane.com/committees/agendas.aspx. where you can choose the May 3 Immigration Task Force meeting.

ALSO TONIGHT – LOCK UP YOUR DRUGS

Today Not Tomorrow-Club TNT, Meriter Health Services and the Urban League invite you to attend:

Lock It up! A Community Discussion about Prescription & Over-the-Counter Medications – Risk, Abuse and the impact on the Adolescent Brain.
Thursday , May 13th 6:30—8:30 pm
2222 S. Park St-Urban League Center of Economic Development

Did you know that drug dealers are not the only suppliers of drugs to our youth. In Wisconsin 5% of youth, aged 12 – 18 years used prescription painkillers from non-medicinal purposes, and for ages 18 to 25 years, that rate is 12%. Those prescription drugs came from their own home medicine cabinets.

Who should attend? Open to the public – Teens, caregivers of teens and all concerned adults. Hear about the teen brain and risk taking, as well as the impact of drugs on the teen brain; legalities of possession and use; law enforcement, schools and prescription & over-the-counter drugs.

Speakers include Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard; Lt. Wayne Strong, Madison Police Dept; Meriter Health Services Pediatricians Viren Bavishi and George Idarraga and pharmacist Ann Ebert.
