Bikies Updates

Arthur Ross to keep his job? Updates on Wilson St and biking with Willy St. Construction.

First, the biking safety issues:

6th District Alder Marsha Rummel has received some complaints about drivers speeding on E Wilson Street between Ingersoll and Baldwin and asked that I pass this information on. Construction began Monday on Williamson Street so we can expect increased traffic on Wilson. Hopefully this will be temporary as people discover that Williamson Street has only one lane open and only inbound, and that Wilson Street doesn’t get them anywhere. Please be careful and let us know if there are other and/or continuing problems. I suspect we will see drivers circulating looking for parking spaces as well. Police has also been informed of this issue.

And also:

Alder Rummel also mentioned concerns about bicycling at night on Williamson Street (again, only one lane open and only inbound) due to a lack of street lighting during construction. Just a reminder to be sure you have good lights and reflectors, both front and rear, when riding at night.

And this from Robbie Webber:

Got this forwarded to me just now. This amendment to the 2011 budget will be introduced at Council on Tuesday, April 19. Things are not voted on the day they are introduced, so it won’t be voted on until May 3.

You can click on the link below for formal language, but what it says is that the current Bicycle-Pedestrian Coordinator position in Traffic Engineering – which was eliminated in the 2011 city budget – will be maintained as it is now. The 2011 budget had created a new Bicycle-Pedestrian Manager position. The Mayor’s office and Human Resources were working on a position description for that position, but had not approved anything, so the job was never advertised.
