Added City Meetings

From the equity report “One of the guiding principles of the RESJ Initiative is authentic, ongoing public engagement and participation.” . . . if we want results, we could start here. Give the public adequate notice of meetings so they could participate if they wanted. To do this, the culture and attitude in city hall has to change. These meetings were all added late and not on the weekly meeting list Monday morning or Friday afternoon, they are all during they day. To me, this signals, they do not want or care about public participation. These kinds of things didn’t used to happen on this regular of a basis, they would have been the exception to the rule, now 3 – 10 meetings are added, nearly a 1/3 of the meetings for the week sometimes, with very little notice to the public. And, they are meetings with NO links to materials that will be discussed, but that doesn’t matter because low income people and people of color don’t need to worry their pretty little heads about the details. And people of color and low income people don’t need to know about the environment or phosphorus in our lakes, or any of that fancy stuff, this is for rich white people who have jobs they can just leave in the middle of the day. We definitely wouldn’t want them involved in any strategic planning . . . (um, isn’t this what the whole equity assessment tool that the city and county are talking about is all about!)
