Yes, Homelessness Is Increasing!

It’s not our imaginations. Twice a year service providers are required to do a “Point in Time” study to see how many homeless persons we can count. From 2010 to 2013 the numbers have increased from 567 to 831 for the January 31 count. And not everyone was counted.

Please note, the number of people who are severely mentally ill and who have chronic substance abuse issues are a very limited number of these folks. And the low numbers of veterans. Some of the numbers jump around, but the one thing that is clear, the numbers go, up, up, up.

And, when I say that everyone is not counted, it is because some of the people who do outreach did not feel comfortable giving the information about the people they come in contact with to the city. So the most remote campers were not counted. I don’t know what that number would have been, but its over 100 for sure. I did count the Occupy folks – 28 people, but I missed 2.
