WTF Part II – Imagine my surprise . . .

When I saw this at the MUNICIPAL building! Not the city-county building, but the one across the street.

This sign is located on Doty St. near the Credit Union Entrance by the covered bike parking. There are three of these signs in this area.

Yes, it has the almost the same wording at the big red signs that were taken down across the street after the City-County Liaison Committee told them they couldn’t put them up until further work was done with homeless service providers.

Here’s what the signs say compared to the ones taken down:

NO LOITERING WHEN BUILDING IS CLOSED
Loitering means sitting on floors, stairways and doorways and having no apparent official business within the building.

ADDED: If you are not actively loading or unloading at this location you are loitering.

Loitering is a violation of the Trespass Ordinance, Madison General Ordinance Sec. 23.07(2), which makes it unlawful for any person to enter or remain on any property of another or enter or remain in any building of another after having been notified by the owner or the occupant not to enter or remain on such premises. Any violator is subject to a penalty of not less than $50 nor more than $500 plus costs.

Madison Police Officers are authorized to arrest any person violating this provision without any further additional warning or notice to you.

If you are here after normal work hours, and all meetings open to the public have been adjourned, and you are NOT here on other official business, please leave the premises immediately.

So, this leads me to ask . . . who put the signs here? Under what authority?  And how do we get them taken down?

  1. Does this mean that the building employees (Credit Union, City, Post Office) who smoke out on that deck are ‘loitering” because they are not actively loading or unloading?
