Election Will Replace Former County Board Chair Scott McDonell

Dane County Board Chair John Hendrick today announced that a special election for Dane County Board of Supervisors District 1, in downtown Madison, has been set for April 2, 2013, to replace Supervisor Scott McDonell, who is now County Clerk.

Candidates may begin circulating nomination papers on January 11 and must file those papers, with at least 50 but not more than 200 valid signatures, by 4 pm on January 28. All forms for potential candidates are available at the Office of the County Clerk, Room 106A, 210 Martin Luther King Boulevard, Madison.

If more than two candidates file proper papers, the election on April 2 will serve as the primary election, with the top two candidates facing off in a general election on May 14.

District 1 encompasses the central isthmus, including the Capitol Square. A map is available here: http://pdf.countyofdane.com/board/SupervisoryDistrict01.pdf

“Congratulations to Scott on his first day as Dane County Clerk,” said Hendrick. “He’s leaving some big shoes to fill.”

McDonell joined the County Board in 1996 and became Chair in 2005. Under his leadership, the Board enacted a requirement that all County contractors offer benefits for domestic partners; invested significantly in cleaning up lakes and beaches; and developed an interoperable radio agreement to help first responders communicate, among many other accomplishments, while holding the line on spending.

“It’s truly been an honor to serve my neighbors and community on the County Board,” said McDonell. “I know those same people are engaged and energetic about their community and the future of the County as a whole. I am certain we will have some top-notch candidates to choose from, and I can’t wait to watch the campaign unfold.”
