Subject: Council office construction starts this week!

Dear Colleagues,

Construction of a new security door in the Common Council office will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 12 and is anticipated to be completed by Friday, August 27, 2010. The office will reopen on Monday, August 30.

To minimize disruptions during construction Common Council staff and operations will be relocated to Room 525, City-County Building (IT Department). Staff will be relocating on Wednesday 8/11 and may not be available at all times.

During normal business hours (7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) alders, city staff and the public will be able to contact staff by email, phone and in Room 525, CCB.

Alders will be able to access the Council Office to pick up mail and use the Alder computer/printer, however we encourage you to visit after-hours only so as not to interfere with the construction work. Note, this access may change when carpet is replaced and painting is required in that area.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during what will no doubt be an inconvenience.

Mark C.

Here’s my list.

#1 – This project doesn’t need to be done, and it certainly doesn’t need to cost 10’s of thousands of dollars simply because one person wants a security door in the council office, the office has been just fine without it this far. Sure, there’s a few annoying people wandering around city hall I’m sure they want to keep out, but was this really necessary at this cost?

#2 – Less than 24 hours notice? What kind of planning is that?

#3 – This is the council office, isn’t it? Why aren’t the things the council members need to to their jobs being relocated? Restricted to after hours? When everyone is in meetings? Whaaaaaa? Did council leadership make this decision? If so, what is wrong with them?

#4 – Why wasn’t this mentioned at CCOC (Common Council Organizational Committee) or the alders notified sooner?

#5 – Who’s in charge around here, the staff or the alders?

  1. $43,858 to be exact. Taxpayers are paying this $ to satisfy the ego of the admin asst. Since the Mayor’s Office & County Exec Office have a security door, the Council Office MUST have one too!! What BS! At least Ald. Bidar-Sielaff voted no on this budget amendment last November.

  2. The Co. Exec’s office doesn’t have a security door. I walk into that office once a month – most recently yesterday, and have never been buzzed in. There is a reception desk, but no security door.
