Warming Shelter Snafu

So, it’s not going to be opening on November 1st at Wright St. and they are backing off on a few other things too. In fact, they know this, because the land use letter of intent says:

The DWS will open if and when the CUP has been approved and will run through April, 2013

And its interesting to find that already it won’t be run 7 days a week a promised – they listed it as:

The DWS will operate Monday through Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

The following is from Larry Palm:

This is information about the proposed Dane County Daytime Warming Shelter (DWS) proposed for Wright Street.

Neighborhood/Community Meeting

I invite everyone to a neighborhood/community meeting to discuss the project, learn more and voice their opinion.

Conditional Use Application
I have just received information about the Conditional Use Application.

All this information is available online at the District 15 development website.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I too have many questions that I hope to have answered October 10. See you then!

When I spoke with Larry, he said that he won’t be waiving the 30 day notice to the neighborhood. Which, as an alder, is a really heard thing to do on a controversial project unless it was a paperwork snafu. The notice to the neighborhood went out on September 25th, so the earliest anything can be heard at the city is the end of October. When I spoke with Larry said that this wouldn’t be approved until early December – but he may have made a mistake on that because conditional uses don’t go to the common council. I believe it just has to be approved by the Plan Commission which would not meet until November 19th.

So, I hear they are looking at another location – one much closer to downtown. But the location is near a program that serves vulnerable children . . . so its a property I know I rejected in searching for a site for a resource center.
