Tour of Lamp House Context – Block and Grounds
by Frank Lloyd Wright Historian Jack Holzhueter
6:00 pm, Wed, June 12
Meet at corner of N. Webster and E Washington Ave.
Open to the public.
A tour for the Madison Landmarks Commission and members of other commissions

A tour of the context of the Lamp House will be given by Jack Holzhueter. He is a Frank Lloyd Wright scholar, a retired editor and contributor of the Wisconsin Magazine of History, and without a doubt, the most knowledgeable person about the Lamp House, it’s history and pivotal significance in the further development and evolution of Wright’s body of works. The Lamp House was developed with his childhood friend Robert Lamp, and became the prototype for no less then 25 of Wright’s building designs.

Here are a couple references that will help in understanding Holzhueter’s talk — readings on the Lamp House, 22 N. Butler, and some historical information on the houses adjoining the Lamp house, in the last link below:
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Designs for Robert Lamp, by John O. Holzhueter.
Wisconsin magazine of history – Vol. 72, No. 2, Winter, 1988-1989. pp. 82-125.
This is a must read about the life-long history of Robert Lamp and Frank Lloyd Wright, and the design and planning for the Robert Lamp House at 22 N. Butler. (see note)
(In reading the online pdf, you may have to pull down the bottom edge of the pdf reader window so the full page is visible. You can alternatively select text and images.)
Online, the portion of the article on the Lamp House begins on page 107.

A blog post from 2009 on This Side of Town shares some historical info on adjoining houses:

Note: Holzhueter’s article also appears, though with more illustrations in the chapter, “Wright’s Designs for Robert Lamp”, published in a book by the Elvejhem Art Museum, Frank Lloyd Wright and Madison: Eight Decades of Artistic and Social Interaction.
