Token Creek Disaster Area – UPDATED

This is how the county treats the homeless. #$%#@! And now the van isn’t going to pick people up today. And don’t forget, they have to be out February 17th at which point there will be no legal place to go. At least this is legal?

URGENT NOTE: Anyone able to provide some transportation to folks who are at camp today. The Porchlight van will not be coming to pick them up or take them back to camp today. I guess its ok for them to just stay there in their puddles.

TOKEN CREEK CAMP FLOODED- URGENT NEEDS: pallets to elevate tents, dry blankets or sleeping bags, dry cardboard for flooring, extension cords, volunteers to help with laundry services, new tents (not sure where we can find them in stores, if at all).

I have no idea what the camp looks like this morning or what it will look like after the snow, but I’m guessing not good. To help with long term solutions, donate here.

  1. I am not without pity, Madame Brenda, especially given the atrocious weather we have had this week. But haven’t you helped make the situation what it is today? If they were in Madison, following Dept of Human Service guidelines, they’d have a warm place to sleep at night. This is on you.

  2. Sir, you are so woefully uninformed; if you could please post these guidelines that explain were single women go when the Salvation Army is full, where single men go that have been banned from the shelter, and where families go when the Family Shelter is full. In the past week during the coldest months of the winter; men, women, and families have been turned away from the shelter. Your cavalier disrespect is expected, but sir, maybe it is on you and people like you who are uninformed. Brenda and many others stepped up to create emergency back up for the shelter system. Do your homework next time.

  3. Thank you Bruce. Blaska can spout all the ignoramous comments he will. He can’t handlr the facts and the truth. Without people like Brenda Konkel and yourself, these homeless you areoon the very margins would be dead. Direct action David Blaska, direct action. Alcoholics, drug addicts, convicted felons and the mentally ill are NOT just neatly packaged elected officials that live in mansions in Maple Bluff, Waukesha and New Berlin. Many are just down on their luck and need a hug and a smile or a tent or roll of toilet paper. Knock off the bigoted bullshit and roll up your sleeves. Help save a life today. It may actually put on a smile on your face.

  4. When Occupy helped create a legal space this summer at the county campground 17 people achieved housing…SO YES IT DID. Occupy Madison did not wish to move to Token Creek. People were moved there, and facing no legal place or the campground, they chose the campground. You are living under the illusion that Brenda is the leader of Occupy, or created homelessness. Please wake up, show up, or go away.

  5. Bruce did. 17 people found housing. Plus, better to have electricity, fire, porta potties, a place to store things, etc. than none. Transportation, of course, sucks. Many are looking forward to going back to work AND having a legal place to live.
