Thursday Morning Round Up

Everything except the new changes to the Edgewater, see separate post for that!

OK, ONE EDGEWATER ISSUE
The developer wasn’t even done presenting the project before the Wisconsin State Journal posted their article on the changes and declared that the Council would not be taking up the matter on Tuesday. At least not the PUD and TIF issues, but they will be discussion the waterfront setback and the 1965 ordinance changes. I’m glad they finally got it out in the public that they won’t be dealing with the many issues on Tuesday, but it would have been nice had someone just announced that at the Urban Design Commission meeting and let the commissioners know. Obviously, they couldn’t grant initial approval on the new changes because they weren’t given the architectural drawings and application for those changes. I will say, these changes are a huge step in the right direction, but without enough information, I agree with the Urban Design Commission, it is hard to know if the height and mass issue has been resolved. My next post will cover that all in detail. Here’s a report from someone who was actually there.

[NOTE: That Wisconsin State Journal article is completely different than the one written and posted last night.]

STATE JOURNAL (OPINION) HALF RIGHT AS USUAL, CAP TIMES BLINDLY TAKES MAYORS SIDE
Politics shouldn’t get in the way. That’s correct. But this isn’t.

Dane County has committed $30 million to pay for radio towers, hardware, software and other start-up costs for DaneCom. And the County Board tonight should support a reasonable cost-sharing plan requiring towns, villages and cities to help pay for annual maintenance expenses.

It doesn’t matter much to taxpayers if this cost lands on one line of their property tax bill or another. They have to pay the bill either way.

The real question is who pays more. Will taxpayers in Madison pay more than taxpayers in Stoughton for the same Dane County System? The debate will be at the County Board meeting this evening. The Cap Times bought the Mayor’s line about this happening too fast. Too bad they didn’t check in with Kristin Czubkowski, she probably cold have told them that PSRC was talking about this for months. Check here tomorrow to find out what happens.

DOES THE MAYOR CARE ABOUT SAFETY
Good question. It is funny (funny sad, not funny ha ha) what the Mayor suddenly gets all adamant about!

ASM RESTORED TENANT SERVICES FUNDING!
They did the right thing! Now, lets see what administration does with it . . . and if it ever comes to fruition or if it will get stalled like the Ratemylandlord.com website.

DOT, FISH FRY, CHILDCARE AND TAXPAYERS
I don’t really blame the people questioning why the state is paying for a fish fry and childcare when people have to take furloughs. There’s a good reason, to get people to attend the meeting, but weren’t there some other ways to do this? Get donations or volunteers?

COURT OF APPEALS KICKS PAID SICK LEAVE TO THE SUPREMES
I wonder how they know what the ruling will be before it’s published?

An open records request pending since last October prompted the Sierra Club to sue the DNR and all they’ve got it no comment? That looks bad.

GOOD NEWS!
Legislators raise $3M less . . . lets hope it was the legislation, not the economy that caused that to happen!

CONGRATS!
On the wedding and, the baby? and doing it your own way! The article doesn’t say if they had they baby yet, but congrats to friends Mark and Erin! (You might recognize a couple of the guys from Little Marsh Overflow in this photo.) Now, what is the name of little Spider Weber? Where’s the news I could use?

IT WAS HUNDREDS, NOT DOZENS

After rallying on the steps of the Capitol and marching to the nearby federal courthouse, participants in yesterday’s demonstration then returned to the Capitol and delivered statements in support of reform legislation aimed at closing the single biggest loophole in Wisconsin’s campaign finance laws, removing the cloak from special interest groups that sponsor campaign advertisements and making those interests stand by their ads.

You can add your voice to those who paid visits to their legislators yesterday. To take action, go here.

To see some photos and video of our event, go here. There are also two videos posted on YouTube, a short version and a longer one that includes footage of the march to the courthouse. To check out Wisconsin Radio Network’s coverage, go here. Wisconsin Public Radio’s coverage is here. And WisconsinEye, the state-level equivalent of C-SPAN, was there too.

These posts are much easier when I do them daily! Hopefully, I didn’t miss too much by posting it early this morning. May update again before 8:30.
