Tar Sands Oil in Dane County?

Not my wheelhouse, but of great concern. Missed this in my week ahead.

This Tuesday, Dane County will be center stage in the battle over dirty tar sands oil.

Enbridge — the corporation responsible for the devastating 2010 tar sands oil spill in Kalamazoo, MI — is trying to build a new pumping station near Marshall. Enbridge needs this pumping station in order to triple the the capacity of the Line 61 pipeline. And if the Line 61 expansion goes through, there will be more tar sands oil flowing through the heart of Wisconsin than would be carried by the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.

This project is bad for our climate and bad for our community — but we have the opportunity to stop it. Will you join us at Tuesday’s hearing and share your concerns about tar sands in Dane County? Here are the details:

WHAT: Dane County Zoning and Land Regulation Committee Public Hearing
WHEN: Tuesday, October 28th at 7:00 PM
WHERE: Room 201 in the County Building, 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Madison

. . .

Line 61 is an existing pipeline that cuts through Wisconsin from Superior to Delevan. If localities up and down Line 61 approve the construction of new pumping stations like the one in Marshall, the 400,000 barrels of tar sands oil now flowing through Dane County will increase to 1.2 million barrels per day. That’s 45% more tar sands oil than would flow through the proposed Keystone XL pipeline — right here in our backyard.

Tuesday’s Dane County Zoning and Land Regulation Committee meeting will be a public hearing on whether to grant a conditional use permit to construct a pumping station on land currently zoned for agriculture. This public hearing will solicit input from citizens about the zoning process, including any concerns about the risks of a potential spill.

We hope you can be there to help us say NO to more tar sands in Dane County. Can’t make it but still want to submit a comment? You can email the committee members here.
