Slow Thursday Morning Round Up

Alright, a little late, but still up by 10:30ish . . . luckily, it would have been a 11 hour work day (board meeting tonight), so I had an extra hour or two to spare this morning . . .

THE AIR YOU BREATHE
It’s not good, again.

PROGRESSIVE DANE’S VISION FOR THE RTA
An ambition plan indeed. (The link above has a glitch, got prodane.org and it should be the first post.)

THAT $30M SCHOOL BOARD BUDGET PROBLEM
TJ gives us the scoop on the latest information available.

WHO’D VERVEER PISS OFF NOW TO BRING THIS BACK UP
No news is news, I guess.

CATERING TO YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
I hear landlords say all the time that they are catering to young professionals for their housing. Depending upon what they say and how they do it, that’s discrimination against students, who are a protected class in Madison. It’s a hard message to get out there, and even the city says that all the time as if its no big deal and no one calls them on it. What surprised me was when the new restaurant at the old Cafe Montmartre location said the same thing:

The target clientele, according to the ALRC application, is professionals over 25.

Um, students are also a protected class for public accommodations. I know it is what the neighborhood and the ALRC want to hear, but careful folks!

CAP TIMES CALLS FOR AN APOLOGY
To Hulsey, which isn’t a surprise. To the union, that is a bigger surprise. I didn’t think they’d throw one deputy under the bus. But I’ve always believed that the in many unions, union leadership doesn’t always, and sometimes rarely, and often poorly reflects the sentiments of the union members. So, its good to see him called out like that.

BULLDOZE 1/4 OF THE CITY
What? 10,000 houses in 3 years.

So his plan is to bulldoze approximately 10,000 houses and empty buildings over the next 3 years and direct new investment into stronger neighborhoods. In the areas that the city plans to bulldoze, the residents would be offered the opportunity to relocate to a better area. For buildings that have already been abandoned, the city could simply use tax foreclosure proceedings to reclaim them. Of course if there were some residents that did not want to move, eminent domain could be used to force them out.

Talk about an area that needs a HOPE VI grant! Yikes. Wonder if that Mayor is getting re-elected?

CHECK OUT THE VIDEO ON CENTRO HISPANO MURAL
This is cool! This is the same artist that did teh mrual on the Social Justice Center. Look for details on the mural dedication on Gallery Night on May 7th. And wait til you see what we are doing with the help of WYOU! Mark your calendars.

EDGEWATER
New plans are out, as is a new partial schedule. No word on if there is a TIF application yet, when Board of Estimates will review it and if the Landmarks Commission will be allowed by the City Attorney to review the project again. I expect us to be told no on the last point, on bad news Friday. Hope I’m wrong.

1,000 JOBS
The promise of 1,000 jobs. Edgewater promised that, but we all know that is not true. The Mayor says that Google could offer it as well. Based on the IT Directors version of how they came up with that number, I’m a bit skeptical. If it is true, why isn’t the city putting the herculean effort into working on this application as they have done for the Edgewater. Where’s the mayors obsessive blogging and “bold leadership”? Where are our priorities as a city?

POINDEXTER ALERT
Mark Clear really has his finger on the pulse of this city. Not. He has claimed:
“I think we’re going to draw the line at silly stunts,” in reference to the Google Fiber application. Enter, Google Fiber ice cream from Babcock Dairy. My guess is that we have another stunt or two in us yet . . .

CAN’T MAKE THE GOOGLE MEETING TONIGHT?
Shouldn’t there be some sort of on-line forum that is going on simultaneously? Like the Isthmus did during the Edgewater meeting. Maybe a Google Wave going on during the meeting? I’m not even sure that there publicly accessible wireless access at Olbrich. They couldn’t even manage to get City Channel live tonight, even if they did, I’m not sure you could stream it on-line, if the City has that figured out yet. Tim Morrissey has some other ideas. Here’s the City Channel announcement:

Madison City Channel to cover Madison’s Google Fiber Application: Public Meeting of March 11, 2010

In mid-February, Google announced plans to bring ultra-high speed fiber networks to residential homes in trial locations around the country. The City will submit an application to Google by March 26 and needs the community’s help to make our application stand out in this highly competitive process. This meeting is a major step in the process of enlisting the community’s help.

The meeting will be held at Olbrich Gardens 3330 Atwood Avenue, Madison, WI 53704 at 7pm.

If you can not attend the meeting, you can watch it on Madison City Channel at the following times:

Monday, March 15 at 7:30pm
Tuesday, March 16 at 12:30pm
Wednesday, March 17 at 9:30pm

or watch it online at www.madisoncitychannel.com/streaming.html.
