Salvation Army Cuts Sunday Morning Community Meals

More service cuts, Tenant Resource Center, Community Action Coalition . . . and now, the Salvation Army.

September 4, 2011: The Salvation Army Temple Corps and Community Center is no longer able to provide a community breakfast meal on Sunday mornings.

Reduction of resources available through The Salvation Army:
As of Sunday, September 4, 2011, the Sunday breakfast meal that has been available at The Salvation Army’s Temple Corps and Community Center building, located at 3030 Darbo Drive, has ended.

Reasons for this change:
The volume of families and individuals accessing our emergency food pantry has dramatically and significantly increased over the past two years. Given the future reduction in State-supported resources, it seems that the need for pantry will continue at this level; The Salvation Army is re-routing resources used for the Sunday breakfast meal to the food pantry.

Over the past two years there have been several incidents of community members arriving for the Sunday breakfast aggressive and/or under the influence of a substance, which has resulted in several police calls and early morning disturbances to our neighbors.

Communication about the change:
Throughout the month of August, Corps and Community Center staff are talking and meeting with individuals who attend the Sunday breakfast, and our neighbors, to provide information and/or assist in problem solving, including providing information on other community breakfast options available.
