Amy Watson, PhD, is a professor at Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois Chicago. She also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Crime Law & Justice. Professor Watson has worked extensively on issues involving the relationship between the criminal justice system and mental health systems in Chicago and around the country. For the past two decades, her research has focused on police encounters with persons with serious mental illnesses and the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model.

For over thirty years, the City of Madison has been fostering friendships with communities around the world, including Arcatao (El Salvador), Freiburg (Germany), Vilnius (Lithuania), Camagüey (Cuba), Kanifing (The Gambia), Mantova (Italy), Obihiro (Japan), Tepatitlán (Mexico), and Bahir-Dar (Ethiopia). Last year’s event was the first of what we hope will be a continuing tradition of sharing experiences between Madison and its sister cities. “Our Sister Cities in the Latin-American World”
This year’s event will highlight “Our Sister Cities in the Latin-American World”; Arcatao, El Salvador, Camagüey Cuba and Tepatitlán, Mexico. The evening will include a keynote address by Eduardo Santana-Castellon (https://prabook.com/web/eduardo.santana-castellon/298866), entertainment by Madison Youth Choirs and Ballet Folklorico de Maria Diaz, photo displays, refreshments, and a buffet dinner.

This is a friendly reminder the Community Immigration Law Center will be open this Friday afternoon, March 22, 2019, for free immigration consultations. This free service is offered every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 2 to 5 pm.

Fans and appreciators of The Willy Street Park are invited to join us at the Annual Meeting of the Willy Street Park Society, 6:30pm Sunday March 31st. The meeting will be at A Place To Be, 911 Williamson Street. Members of the Board will be elected and we’ll talk over updates and plans for this year in the park (all apologies for any inconvenience caused by our rescheduling of this meeting from a few weeks ago.)

MADISON AREA BUS ADVOCATES – TWO MEETINGS
Next Monday, at our March 25 MABA meeting 6-8 pm in the downtown Madison library’s first floor conference room, new MDOT director Tom Lynch will talk with us about the mission of the Madison DOT and about its BRT vision.
Next Thursday March 28, the Annual meeting of the Wisconsin Transit Riders Alliance will be in Room 301 of Madison’s downtown library 11 am – 1 pm. The meeting will begin with a talk with Rep. Debra Kolste (D-Janesville), ranking member of the Assembly’s Transportation Committee. She has helped Evers formulate the transportation part of his biennial budget.
EXTRA COPS LOOKING FOR OWI AND SEATBELT VIOLATIONS IN MARCH
People have been noticing. Hopefully this notice isn’t too late for you! This is from the Madison Police Department:
The Madison Police Department, in partnership with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, will be providing extra patrols that specifically enforce alcohol and seatbelt laws throughout the month of March. These additional enforcement efforts are made possible through traffic overtime grants provided by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Did You Know?: Drivers can be arrested for OWI even if their blood-alcohol content is below 0.08 if it’s determined their level of impairment makes them unable to safely operate a motor vehicle.
In Wisconsin, drivers can be stopped and cited for failing to wear a safety belt. Also, drivers can be cited for every unbuckled passenger in their vehicle.

1st Ever Mushroom Log Inoculation Workshop Fundraiser for Silverwood Park, 771 Silver Lane, Edgerton, WI
April 6th, 2019 from 9-12am
Directions: Take I-90 to highway exit 160, which is the Edgerton, WI exit just before I-90 enters Rock County. Turn east at the top of the exit ramp and follow the road east and then curving north until you see a sign for Highway 106. Turn right (or east) on Highway 106 as though you are going to Jefferson County. Silver Lane is located on the left after you pass the parking area for Rice Lake, and then a farm homestead. If you find yourself in Jefferson County, you’ve gone a few blocks too far.
Join Friends of Silverwood Park and Misty Dawn Farm to learn how to inoculate and care for shiitake logs and inoculate your own logs to add to your garden.
Sale of shiitake logs will go to help fund management and educational programs at the park.
Logs were harvested this winter from the Silverwood Park forest as part of their forest restoration program.
The cost per logs will be $15 for one log or $20 for two.
Or you can pre-order already inoculated logs for pick up.
Pre-inoculated logs you pre order your logs at $25 for one or $40 for two (interested in more? We can quote you a volume price).

Inoculations will occur rain or shine in the pole barn. Dress for the weather and bring work gloves, water bottle and any snacks.
EARLY VOTING
In-person absentee voting is underway for City of Madison residents for the April 2 Spring Election. In addition to the City Clerk’s Office in the City-County Building, absentee voting and voter registration are available at all Madison Public Library locations. Additional early voting locations will open on March 25 at UW-Madison campus locations. Hours and locations are listed here. To view a sample ballot, look up your voter registration or your street address here.
If you are voting absentee through the mail, remember that Madison’s mail is processed in Milwaukee, increasing the amount of time it takes to return your ballot to the City Clerk’s Office. Rather than mailing your absentee ballot back to the Clerk’s Office, you are welcome to drop it off with the Clerk’s Office personnel at an absentee voting site. Otherwise, be sure to mail your ballot back to the Clerk’s Office as soon as possible so it can be counted.
