Recall Repercussions

The results were in this summer with the democrats flipping two seats in the Senate recalls. While the republicans lost two seats, they still maintained a slight 17-16 majority. Thus both sides declared “victory”. In case your scoring at home and want to see who won exactly( FYI – it was the people of Wisconsin) we can see by watching what actually happens in the Senate. This spring, with such items as Act 10 and others, the republican majority passed whatever they wanted with no democrat support or input.

Fast Forward to October(why not September? Because the republican legislature took the month off) and we see the results of the Senate Recalls are already paying dividends. Now we actually get to use Public School Money for Public Schools:

The Senate approved a measure Tuesday that would curtail the expansion of school vouchers in Wisconsin, at least for now.

The voucher program provides parents in eligible school districts with state subsidies to help defray their children’s private school tuition. The subsidies have been a point of contention in Wisconsin for years. Conservatives insist the program gives children in struggling school districts an alternative, but opponents see it as vote of no confidence in public education and complain it pulls precious state dollars away from public schools.

The state Department of Public Instruction estimated it handed out $130.7 million in vouchers during the 2010-11 school year. Nearly 40 percent of that money came from a reduction in state aid for public schools in the city of Milwaukee, while the rest came from tax dollars, according to DPI.

At least for now means, we MUST recall Walker/Kleefisch or else they will continue to try and privatize our public schools.

In case you were wondering, the right wing in this state noticed, and they are not happy!

  1. “School Vouchers” is a program created to justify using tax dollars to pay for religious classes which is directly blocked by the constitution. They should call it “indirectly funding school prayer with tax dollars” and be truthful for once about their motives. Run by the evidence burning defrocked politician Scott Jensen whose stench permeates this movement.

Motive? Stripping tax dollars out of the education process.

Not to provide a better education for anyone – except the taxpayer who better be noticing by now. Quoting stacked “studies” and manufactured statistics hiring a slew of bloggers these tax siphoners  have overplayed their hand and taxpayers and voters are shutting them down.

Reject Republicans, Reduce Corporate Influence and Recall Temporary Governor Scott Walker !

  2. Yes, but yesterday SB 95 — the so-called “flexibility” omnibus bill  — passed on partisan lines.  This guts the SAGE class size reduction mandate, allows teachers to be disciplined based on test scores and much more.

  3. yes I saw that, things are not perfect but I do not think there is any doubt they would have dramatically increased school vouchers if they still had their 19 -14 advantage….it shows we were successful but we have more work to do!

  4. My read on the voucher expansion is that the GOP Senators and the Reps in places like Green Bay thought it was an electoral albatross and pushed to get the limits in place.  The recalls and the protests both probably played a part in that, but even without all that’s been done voucher expansion was shaky politically..
