Police Chief Finalists

It’s down to two . . .

Statement from the Police and Fire Commission

Public statement regarding the Police Chief Appointment process

Commissioners have identified two finalists for further evaluation for appointment as our next Chief of Police, both currently employed as City of Madison police officers: Sgt. Mike Koval, and Capt. Carl Gloede.

The PFC has commissioned thorough background investigations of these finalists and will conduct further interviews and other appropriate review of their applications, their credentials, and their capacity to provide the department and community leadership expected of Madison’s Police Chief.

We anticipate that the primary background investigations will be conducted with the assistance of the Dane County Sheriff’s Department.

I am fond of Captain Gloede and the way he has handled various issues around homelessness in downtown, the day center and Occupy Madison. I am impressed by his core values I have seen demonstrated. I think he’s much better than many in the leadership of the police department that I have dealt with over the past 20 years. When I posted that enthusiasm for his finalist status, a couple people I respect had some serious concerns about him, which is confusing to me as I have repeatedly had good experiences with him. I guess we’ll see what happens . . .
