Public Statement by the Board

Commissioners are developing a comprehensive plan and calendar for the appointment of our next Police Chief. We expect to receive comment and consultations through October 30, to be followed by periods for receiving and reviewing applications and conducting our testing, interviewing, and evaluation procedures, leading to the appointment of the Chief early in 2014.

We actively seek comment regarding the needs of the City and the department from members of the public, government officials, academic and professional experts, and members of the department. We will distribute questionnaires to all department employees and will invite public comment by questionnaire or otherwise.

We will hold a major public listening session for direct oral comment to the Board on October 14, 2013, at 6:00 p.m., in the newly reopened Madison Public Library downtown branch.

Meanwhile, in the absence of the Chief and under established department procedures, duty assignments, and chain of command protocols, and under city ordinance provisions, the Assistant Chiefs share the responsibilities of the Chief of Police until we make our permanent appointment to the position, with the senior Assistant Chief, Randy Gaber, taking the lead role.
