Orton Park Neighborhood Sept. 28 Walking Tour Marks
Madison Trust for Historic Preservation’s 40th Anniversary

For generations Orton Park on Madison’s near east side has been a place of relaxation, recreation and celebration. But in Madison’s early days, the area served as a final resting place for the dearly departed.

Orton Park and the surrounding residential neighborhood will be the focus of the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation’s (MTHP) Sunday afternoon, Sept. 28, 2014, historic architecture tour. Timed tickets for the two-hour walking tour are $30 ($25 for MTHP members) and can be purchased at www.madisonpreservation.org. Limited tickets may be available the day of the tour.

Tour groups will leave every half hour between 1:00 and 4:30 p.m. from Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1021 Spaight St. Parking is available in the church’s parking lots.

The tour of one of Madison’s oldest neighborhoods, part of the historic Third Lake Ridge, will include many exteriors, three interiors, and one garden. Participants will see homes designed by local architects in distinctive styles as diverse as Italianate, Queen Anne, Greek and Tudor revival, Craftsman and Prairie from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

“Tour participants will see many examples of how the neighborhood has benefited from the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation’s efforts to landmark and encourage restoration of our city’s historic buildings,” said Ginny Way, MTHP President. Orton Park Tour Chair Vicki Siekert added a thanks and some advice, “We are grateful to local businesses Willy Street Co-op and Apex Property Management for sponsoring this tour—and we remind participants to wear comfortable shoes!”
