Open Forum On Tenant’s Rights Tonight

Tonight, March 29, at 5:30 pm at the Fifth Quarter Studio (2nd Floor) in Union South. there will be an open forum on the past and future of tenants rights in Wisconsin.

Scott Walker, Robin Vos, and their cronies in the Wisconsin Realtors’ Association and the Apartment Association are rewriting landlord-tenant law to make life easier for landlords and harder for tenants. When SB 107 became law in December, it wiped out decades of tenants’ rights legislation in Madison and Dane County. On March 16, the WI state legislature passed SB 466, a bill that erodes tenants’ rights in the state law. Another bill, AB 668, is being prepared for committee. It would make it possible for landlords to issue a 5-day eviction notice with no option to cure for any “criminal activity” committed on the landlord’s property by the tenant or “an associate.” This bill would allow landlords to evict victims of domestic abuse!

Are you interested in learning how we can fight back against this anti-tenant legislation? The Wisconsin Alliance for Tenants’ Rights is convening an open forum on the history and future of tenant organizing in Madison. Knowing the history of tenant – landlord relations in Madison will help us develop effective strategies for responding to
these bills. Speakers will include Deborah Percival (former organizer for the now defunct Madison Tenants’ Union), Brenda Konkel (executive director of the Tenant Resource Center), and Colin Gillis (an organizer for the Wisconsin Alliance for Tenants’ Rights). Panelists will discuss lessons learned from past struggles, the impact of SB 107 and SB 466, and what WATR is doing to fight back against the bills that have passed as well as future anti-tenant legislation.
