Suspiciously Light (City) Week Ahead
Edgewatery Goodness Week Ahead
Edgewater Round Up from Last Week (Kinda Long . . . Sorry)

THANK YOU
Despite my light blogging the week before I left on vacation and little to no blogging for a week of vacation, my blog hit yet another record last month for readership. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

LEAVING ON A JET PLANE
During last week’s Edgewater presentation to the Council, council members were kind of led to believe that Bob Dunn was going to miss his plane and instead chose to be with the council that evening. Turning out, his private plane was waiting for him at the airport. No missed plane. Tho, when one alder found out, the first thing the person said was “I wonder what Bob Dunn’s carbon footprint is.” Made me giggle just a little, so I thought I’d share.

TONE DEAF
This is not how to win friends. When small towns are concerned about losing business from people don’t stop in their towns, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz has this to say “The first thing is we need to step back and understand what a great thing this is for Madison.”

SCHOOL BOARD WEEK AHEAD
TJ Mertz does his Brenda Konkel impression over at AMPS. Thanks TJ!

COUNTY BOARD WEEK AHEAD
County Board week ahead is coming. Just overslept this morning. Good way to start the first day back to work. Luckily, they only have a dozen meetings on their agenda.

COMMUNICATIONS TO THE SECOND DISTRICT
After many complaints about Alder Maniaci’s communications with the district regarding, one persons did some research to find out exactly how much she was communicating with her district via listserves regarding the Edgewater. This is what they found.

TLNA yahoo list serve has only gotten 5 posts from her since June 1st, and at least three were Forwards. The James Madison Park Neighborhood Association yahoo list serve got a total of three in all of 2009 and one in January, 2010.

WOMEN IN POLITICS
While some take pleasure in the great speculation about why Lawton didn’t run, I found this article interesting on a different level. Wisconsin has never had a woman governor. There is only one woman County Executive in Wisconsin. Does that sound right to you? Read the article, there is more in there about women politicians.

HISTORIC HOUSES
This is the third in the series. I attended the first one and was glad I did!

MADISON TRUST PRESENTS OLD-HOUSE WORKSHOP ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE ‘HISTORIC’

MADISON, Jan. 30, 2010 – Homeowners and residents who want to better understand what “historic” designations mean can attend a workshop at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, presented by the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation.

The old-house program will take place at the Goodman Atwood Community Center at 149 Waubesa Street in Madison. The workshop is $10 per person, payable at the door. More information is available at 608-441-8864.

The workshop, “What Does ‘Historic’ Mean?,” will answer questions about being part of a Madison historic district or listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The program will explain the processes for local, state, and national designation, the meaning of designation, and dispel common myths that discourage owners from listing their homes.

Madison Trust Executive Director Jason Tish will discuss local designation and Wisconsin’s National Register Coordinator Daina Penkiunas will explain how to be individually listed or part of a National Register Historic District.

The Madison Trust’s 2010 workshop series is sponsored by Home Savings Bank.

A workshop about homeowner’s tax credits will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at the Goodman Atwood Center. Jim Sewell, former senior preservation architect at the Wisconsin Historical Society, will explain one of the advantages of listing in the State or National Registers of Historic Places — eligibility for a 25 percent state income tax credit for repair and rehabilitation work. Workshop participants will learn how to qualify for this program that helps preserve houses and pocketbooks.

The Madison Trust for Historic Preservation is a non-profit organization that helps preserve the architectural and historical heritage of the greater Madison area through advocacy and education. Preservation field services provided by the Madison Trust are assisted by a Partners in the Field challenge grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Web site is at http://www.madionstrust.org

NEW CITY STAFF FOR EDGEWATER PROJECT?
Wow, this is amazing. When other departments have to live without, the Mayor’s office gets to hire a staff person while their staff is on family leave. And, to add insult to injury, the replacement is doing a fraction of the job, check this out.

As you may know, Larry Studesville started working in my office this week to fill in for Mario while he’s on leave. We need Council approval to double fill Mario’s position beyond 45 days. A resolution to do so was approved at BOE this week and will be considered by the Council next Tuesday.

I am attaching a list of staff issue assignments during this interim period. Larry will be taking over all of Mario’s planning and economic development portfolio, with the exception of the Hilldale Target development, which has been assigned to Joel. Rachel will cover state legislative issues in Mario’s absence.

In other changes, Janet will be helping out on the Central Library and Ray will take over responsibility for the Water Utility and the Blue Ribbon Committee on Clean Elections. Joel will take primary responsibility for federal relations. Andrew will assume responsibility for implementation of the ERP project. Rachel will staff the Mayors Innovation Project.

Please feel free to contact me or Janet if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Mayor Dave

Never mind that the council hasn’t approved this yet. With much of his job being dished out to other staff, what is this guy getting paid for?
