Monday Morning Round Up

Why do I feel like I am already behind for the week? Sigh . . .

CORPORATE FINANCING OF CAMPAIGNS, WISCONSIN STYLE
Disclose it and get shareholder approval and you’re in the clear. Unsettling, indeed.

OH BUMMER!
This could solve a few problems with local budgets! But, uh, did anyone really think the answer was anything but no?

SCHOOL WEEK AHEAD
Moving towards finalizing their budget. The May 4th deadline is just weeks ahead.

OPEN, TRANSPARENT AND . . . FLAWED
Following the school board budget has been one of the most frustrating and confusing things I’ve done in a while. They make the city processes look absolutely clear! I really feel like the school staff is making it harder on the school board, employees and public than it needs to be. Bad assumptions, wrong information and what looks like flat out scare tactics. I think it goes beyond semantics. We deserve better than this. Chicken little, indeed.

I (VERY SELFISHLY) LIKE THIS IDEA!
Build the library on East Washington Avenue!

HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT
Right? Right. But is seems you’d never know it in this city. Some are hoping to do something (radical!) about it. Check out how you can help them, cuz really, its not so much radical, as logical.

THAT BUILDING IS TOO BIG!
Those darn downtown residents they are always standing in the way of economic development . . . uh, oooops, wait, its the residents of Grandview Commons that think a building is too big. Hmmmm . . .

I’M PRETTY SURE WE DECIDED THIS DIDN”T WORK . . .
Sending high speed rail trains under Monona Terrace didn’t work cuz there weren’t enough tracks to accommodate freight and it would interfere with future plans for commuter rail. And stopping at Monona Terrace would just further complicate the logistics of making it happen, and backing up the trains from Monona Terrace was an issues. I know it was almost 10 years ago, but I’m pretty sure that is what we found. Somewhere, in the 42 boxes of paper in my attic, I’m sure i have the answer, but I’m hoping to find the report another way.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING THE ONLY THING THAT CAN BE BUILT
Ironic eh? Developers now need WHEDA tax credits to get financing and are willing to do affordable housing. Well, “affordable”.

WATER MAIN FLUSHING
It already started, but here’s where to expect it this week.

HERE’S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT ON EARTH DAY

Did you know a B-52 burns 55 gallons of jet fuel every minute? Or that an Abrams tank gets half a mile per gallon? Or that keeping a single soldier in Afghanistan requires burning 22 gallons of fuel a day?

Hybrid cars and better light bulbs won’t be enough if we don’t rein in our out-of-control military, which is burning 3.5 million gallons of fuel a day to occupy Iraq and Afghanistan.
WNPJ’s new “Carbon Footprint of War” flyers (.pdf) help to make the connection between the need for serious action to address the global threat of climate change and the need to end war. This set of four quarter-sheet flyers is perfect for flyering at all Earth Day events.
