DANE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS RECOGNIZES GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION EFFORTS

June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month

DANE COUNTY, Wis. — On Thursday, June 26, 2025, the Dane County Board of Supervisors passed 2025 RES-045, formally recognizing and supporting local efforts to prevent gun violence in Dane County. The resolution was adopted in conjunction with National Gun Violence Awareness Month, which raises public awareness about the urgent need to prevent gun violence and address its lasting impacts in communities across the country.

“We on the County Board are committed to confronting this public health crisis,” said County Board Chair Patrick Miles. “Last March we called on the Legislature to enable us to do just that. Passing the ‘Safer Summer’ bill package would be a significant step in the right direction.”

Gun violence is recognized as a public health crisis by Public Health Madison & Dane County, which leads local efforts to reduce firearm-related deaths and injuries through data analysis, violence prevention programming, and community partnerships.

“In Wisconsin, an average of 69 children and teens die by guns every year, 33% through suicide; and 38 Dane County residents lose their lives to firearms each year—with 80% to suicide,” said Supervisor Rick Rose (Dist. 16). “I am so grateful for Students Demand Action, a youth-led movement who are at the forefront of gun violence prevention advocacy, and I join them in asking for an Extreme Risk Protection Order process, expanding background checks, and strengthening our gun laws to prevent further tragedies.”

The board also welcomed Stella Osiedacz, a volunteer with the Wisconsin Students Demand Action chapter, to speak in support of the resolution. “Gun violence prevention work is hard. Many of us come to this advocacy after traumatic loss in our communities. Many times we go to speak with the same lawmakers over and over who continue to do nothing even though a majority of their constituents are asking for change,” said Osiedacz. “This resolution is a reminder to all of us to keep going and keep showing up. Thank you, Dane County Board Members for recognizing our efforts, your support is going to make a difference.”

In addition to recognizing the leadership of Students Demand Action, the resolution also highlights the work of organizations such as Moms Demand Action and Focused Interruption, which strengthen community-driven approaches to advancing safety, resilience, and healing.

The resolution affirms the Dane County Board’s commitment to partnering with Public Health Madison & Dane County and other local organizations to expand gun violence prevention, education, intervention, and support services across the county.

NEWLY ELECTED DISTRICT 1 SUPERVISOR COLIN BARUSHOK SWORN IN FOLLOWING SPECIAL ELECTION

DANE COUNTY, Wis. — On Thursday, June 26, 2025, Colin Barushok was officially sworn in as the new District 1 Supervisor on the Dane County Board of Supervisors, following his victory in the June 17, 2025, special election. The swearing-in ceremony, led by Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell took place during a regularly scheduled meeting of the County Board.

County Board Chair Patrick Miles welcomed Barushok to the board. “I look forward to Colin bringing his community experience to the County Board,” said Miles. “The Board and District 1 constituents will benefit from his fresh perspective.”

Barushok succeeds former District 1 Supervisor Elizabeth Doyle, who resigned in March after announcing her move outside the district. Barushok, a legislative staffer in the Wisconsin State Legislature, won the race with 51.5% of the vote. The election drew 1,079 voters, or roughly 9% of the district’s registered voters.

Following his swearing-in, Barushok was appointed to the County Board’s Environment, Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee and Land Conservation Committee. “I’m honored that my neighbors have given me the opportunity to represent and serve our downtown community. I’m committed to meeting their needs by uplifting their values and collaborating closely with my colleagues,” said Barushok. “I’m ready to get to work to protect and improve our County.”

Streets Division Updates

  • 2025 Recyclopedias Now Available – Pick up a copy at your local Madison Public Library location or a Streets Division office.  Paper copies can also be mailed to you upon request.  Just contact the Streets Division to have any of  our free resources sent out to you.
  • Last Chance to Take the Recycle Better Class – The final Recycle Better class for 2025 begins on July 2, 2025.  The class is a collaboration between Sustain Dane and the Streets Division to teach you more about recycling, and also help you teach others.  You can sign up to take this class on the Sustain Dane page.
  • Sign up for Holiday Notices – Don’t let holidays trip up your trash and recycling schedule.  We have a feature on our website where you can sign up to receive an email to let you know when collections are delayed for holidays and also for severe weather.  It’s easy and free.  Just  go to the Trash & Recycling section of the Streets Division page, and sign up for the schedule update email list.
  • Electronics Recycling is Free – Remember to bring your printers, cell phones, computers, and televisions, and so on to a Streets Division drop-off site so they can be recycled.  This is free for every City of Madison resident.  Drop-off site hours and information is available on our website.  And there is specific electronics recycling  information available on the E-cycling page.
  • Dane County Clean Sweep for Hazardous Waste  – Dane County Clean Sweep is the location to take paints, pesticides, and other chemicals.  They just recently started taking even more material, like fireworks and ammunition.  This is also where you need to take those little propane cylinders for camp stoves.  You can find out more information about everything this county facility takes at their website.
  • Don’t Forget About Food Scraps – We have more opportunities now than ever before to compost food scraps locally.  There are six locations in Madison between what is available from the City of Madison and Dane County.  And, of course, preventing food waste is a much greener and wallet-friendly way of tackling this problem.  You can learn more about food scraps composting and food waste prevention on the  Food Scraps website.

MADISON UPDATES ITS ADA TRANSITION PLAN

Over the past year, the Department of Civil Rights and many other City of Madison agencies have worked to identify barriers to access in all city programs, facilities and the public right of way as they worked on revitalizing Madison’s American with Disability Act (ADA) Transition Plan.

Today those efforts are ready for residents to review and comment on.

“This an important step to ensuring all our residents can participate and engage with their local government,” said Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. “The City of Madison has a proud legacy of championing and facilitating access. Revitalizing our ADA Transition Plan is one way we honor that history.”

Madison enacted an ADA Transition Plan in the 1990s and has maintained ADA compliance. However, the City has grown and changed since the 1990’s and so have the compliance requirements. Although there is no requirement that a city revitalize their ADA Transition Plan, Madison is committed to improving access for all its residents.

“We recognize that collaboration with residents with disabilities is an important part of developing an effective ADA Transition Plan and a more inclusive, equitable, and thriving Madison” says Rebecca Hoyt, Disability Rights and Services Specialist.  “This plan will provide a framework for the City to work towards removing barriers to access in the years to come.”

The City consulted with Access to Independence, a local disability-led organization, to help in evaluating and updating the public right-of-way portion of the ADA Transition Plan. The parties developed a plan to bring the City of Madison to full ADA compliance so that it is accessible and useable for all residents. The plan also incorporates residents’ recommendations provided at the 2023 Disability Summit to extend program access beyond ADA compliance.

The proposed ADA Transition Plan is open for public comment June 24 – August 23, 2025. The City of Madison will be hosting the following virtual public information sessions to answer questions and receive feedback from the community.

  • Programs, Services, Activities, and Employment – July 9th 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Registration Link
  • Public Facilities and Web and Digital Accessibility – July 23rd – 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Registration Link

The final plan will be introduced to the Common Council in September 2025.

The 35th anniversary of the passage of the Americans Disability Act (ADA) is July 26. The federal legislation is a civil rights law that protects the rights of people with disabilities in public life. It requires public entities like the City of Madison to provide services, programs, and activities that are accessible and useable for people with disabilities. When the ADA was signed into law in 1990, public entities were required to look at all their programs, facilities, and employment policies, and the public right-of-way to identify barriers to access. They were to develop an ADA Transition Plan so they could plan to remove barriers to access for people with disabilities over time.

We welcome and encourage comments and suggestions, especially from Disabled Madison residents/residents with disabilities and disability-led organizations.

Request alternate formats, accommodations or translation by contacting: RHoyt@cityofmadison.com or LAP@cityofmadison.com

2025 RECYCLOPEDIAS & THE FINAL RECYCLE BETTER COURSE OF 2025

Hello, Madison Recyclers

Final Recycle Better Course of 2025

If you haven’t taken the Sustain Dane Recycle Better course, your last opportunity to do so is next week, July 2, 2025.

This time we’re doing it in the evening, and it will once again be online.

The goal of the class is not only to teach you details about recycling, but it’s also about empowering you to teach others in your life the right way to recycle.

You can register for the class, and learn more about the Recycle Better course, on the Sustain Dane page.

Sustain Dane does ask for a small tuition for hosting this course.  If the cost is too much for you, and you would like to attend, please reach out to Sam Worden of Sustain Dane to ask about waiving the fee.

2025 Recyclopedias Are Here!

Finally, paper copies of the 2025 Recyclopedia are available!

You can pick up free copies at your local Madison Public Library location or the City of Madison Streets Division office.  If you contact the Streets Division, we can mail one to you as well.

We’re also happy to work with places to have them distributed, so if you own a business where you would like to have these available to your customers, or maybe the church you attend would like to have these, or something in between – contact us and we can see about getting some copies to you.

I’m certainly open to ideas on other locations where we could have these free booklets for people to pickup.  If you have a good idea, let me know.

The Herd is Growing!

We’re making great progress on our goal to collect a bison herd worth of food scraps.

We have free buckets, stickers, guides, and plenty free good vibes.

There are three City of Madison farmer’s market locations to drop-off your scraps.

And if you ever want to say hello to the farmer that takes your scraps and turns them back into vegetables, stop by the South Madison Farmers’ Market and say hello to Robert Pierce.  We accept scraps at the South Madison Market on Tuesdays, too.

In Conclusion…

Thank you all for your time and attention.
