The Madison Night Market is back for its 9th annual season on the Capitol square. Come out to support more than 80 local vendors, artisans, and businesses that give our city its distinctive flavor on Thursday, June 11, 2026, between 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm.
Also take a moment to help build Madison’s future. The Downtown Area Plan staff will be at the market to hear your perspective and share information about the Plan. Stop by, share what matters to you, and help guide the next 20 years of downtown Madison.
New Farmer’s Market at Junction Ridge Park – Fridays through September 25
The Junction Ridge Neighborhood Association recently launched a brand‑new Farmers’ Market on Madison’s west side. Located at Junction Ridge Park (8502 Elderberry Rd, just a block and a half off Junction Road), the market will run every Friday from May 15 through September 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shoppers can enjoy a wide selection of fresh vegetables, fruits, honey, eggs, meats, flowers, chocolates, and many other local goods.
Streets Division Updates
- Food Scraps at Farmers’ Markets: There are FOUR neighborhood farmers’ markets accepting food scraps for composting. Details about the east side, downtown, southside, and westside markets are on the food scraps website.
- Food Scraps at the Streets Division Drop-off Sites: Starting on June 1, you will be able to drop-off food scraps at all three of the Streets Division drop-off sites, too.
- Yard Waste Collection Completed until the Fall: Do not put out leaves, weeds, grass clippings, and other yard waste for pickup. The spring pickups are over. There are no summer collections. Curbside pickups return in the fall. Set out dates for the fall will be published to the yard waste website likely by late August or early September.
- Brush Collection Continues: Curbside collection of tree limbs, branches, and other brush continues. Get the dates when you should put your brush out for collection from the brush collection website.
- Recycling Tip – Zip Ties and Plastic Straps: This may be one of things you never think about much, but after you cut off a zip tie or plastic strapping from a packaging they go into the trash. Just because its plastic doesn’t mean it can be recycled. Your recycling cart is really meant for plastic containers – think milk jugs, pop bottles, laundry soap bottles, berry clamshell boxes, butter tubs, yogurt containers, and so on. There’s all kinds of plastic stuff in our lives, but only a slice of it actually belongs in the recycling cart.
- Remember to be Safe With Your Batteries: We have a handy website to help you out with the proper way to handle them.
Dane County Board Welcomes Return of Renowned German Jazz Trio
Edgar Knecht Trio returns for series of performances as part of Kassel–Dane Sister County Partnership
DANE COUNTY, Wis. — Dane County is once again welcoming world-class jazz musicians from its sister county of Kassel, Germany, for a series of performances in early June 2026. The Edgar Knecht Trio, led by acclaimed pianist Edgar Knecht and joined by drummer Tobias Schulte and bassist Till Spohr, will perform across Dane County and the region as part of the ongoing Kassel–Dane Sister County Partnership, with support from DANE Arts.
This year’s tour will feature the trio’s newest project, Colours of Europe, a celebration of European cultural diversity that transforms folk songs from France, Austria, Italy, Spain, and Germany into melodically moving ballads and rhythmically rousing grooves.
“The Edgar Knecht Trio brings a distinct sound that blends classical music, jazz, and world music traditions in a way audiences here have come to love,” said Supervisor Chuck Erickson (District 23), who has long been active in the Kassel–Dane relationship and chair of the Kassel–Dane Task Force. “Their return is another great chapter in our partnership with Kassel, and I encourage anyone who appreciates exceptional live music to come out for one of their performances.”
2026 Tour Dates:
- Sunday, June 7, 2026 | 5 p.m. | Allen Centennial Garden, UW–Madison (outdoor concert) — FREE
- Monday, June 8, 2026 | 7 p.m. | Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, 1584 N. Prospect Ave., Milwaukee — FREE
- Thursday, June 11, 2026 | 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. | Token Creek Concert Barn, 4037 WI-19, DeForest (indoor concert) — paid tickets required
The Kassel–Dane Sister County Partnership began in 2007, when the two counties entered into a formal agreement designed to exchange ideas and build partnerships in areas including renewable energy, regional transportation, workforce training, and continuing education. Over the years, the relationship has supported a wide range of cultural exchanges, from artists and photographers to musicians and orchestras. Five artists have been sent to the modern art fair doumenta, which is held in Kassel every five years.
The Edgar Knecht Trio previously toured Dane County in 2016 and 2019, with past performances at the Stoughton Opera House, First Congregational Church, the Madison College Big Band’s Mitby Theater, the Waunakee High School PAC, and the Oregon High School PAC. Additionally, the Trio has jointly performed with the Madison College Big Band and the chamber music group, “Con Vivo!.” Finally, the Edgar Knecht Trio has provided workshops and clinics with the Sun Prairie High School Jazz Ensemble and the Madison College Big Band.

DEMOLITIONS
This is a notice that Aaron Williams will be filing a demolition permit application. The application will be submitted around June 11, 2026 or later. The applicant seeks to demolish a Institutional Building (CALS). The address is 1800 University Ave Madison, WI 53705.
The City’s Landmarks Commission provides an advisory review of all demolition applications. The Landmarks Commission will determine if the building has historic value. If it has historic value, then the Plan Commission will review the application. The Plan Commission will hold a public hearing when they review the application. If it has no known historic value, the Director of Building Inspection may approve the application.
For more information about this application, please contact the applicant, Aaron Williams, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 21 N. Park Street 6th Floor Madison, WI 53711 at aaron.williams@wisc.edu or (608)263-3000.
Applicant’s Comments:
Demolition of 1800 University Avenue. Constructed in 1910, the facility has served multiple academic and administrative functions over its lifetime. The removal is driven by the building’s prolonged vacancy, outdated systems, non-compliance with current codes and ADA requirements, and the high cost of rehabilitation.
Following removal, the site will be stabilized and converted to lawn until such time future plans are determined through the forthcoming Framework Plan.
If you have any questions about the City’s application review process, please contact the City of Madison Planning Division at (608) 266-4635.

Dane County Board Introduces Moratorium on Data Center Development
18-month pause would allow Advisory Committee on Data Centers to complete its work and inform potential policy changes
DANE COUNTY, Wis. — On Friday, May 15, 2026, a resolution was introduced that would establish an 18-month moratorium on the receipt of applications for, and the issuance of, zoning permits for the siting or placement of data centers in Dane County. The resolution, 2026 RES-039, would give the county time to complete its ongoing research into the impacts of data centers and consider policy changes to address them.
The moratorium would apply to towns subject to county zoning. It would not apply to cities, villages, or towns that have adopted their own zoning codes.
The resolution comes as the county board’s Advisory Committee on Data Centers (ACDC) continues its work researching the impacts of data center development, including questions about energy use, water resources, long-term land use, and the demands of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure on local communities.
“The Advisory Committee on Data Centers was created to research the promises and the complex questions that come with this type of development,” said County Board Chair Patrick Miles. “There is growing concern that Dane County communities could see project proposals before that work is complete. This moratorium gives the committee the time it needs to finish and gives the county the opportunity to make thoughtful, data-driven policy decisions informed by their findings.”
The resolution finds that the construction and operation of data centers raise potential health and safety concerns, including the strain on public services and infrastructure, and potential impacts on property values, agricultural land, and the general welfare of residents, businesses, and visitors. It also notes that data center development is inconsistent with the Dane County Comprehensive Plan and the Dane County Zoning Ordinance.
“Data center development as it currently stands is not consistent with existing county plans and ordinances,” said Chair Miles. “Since the county moratorium can only legally apply to towns under county zoning, it is our hope that cities, villages, and towns with their own zoning codes will consider adopting their own moratoriums so their residents can also benefit from the work of the ACDC.”
The resolution has been referred to the Zoning and Land Regulation Committee and is scheduled for consideration at the committee’s meeting tonight, Tuesday, May 26, 2026, before returning to the full county board.

Latest Update 5/22/2026
General Project Information
The John Nolen Drive project includes reconstructing John Nolen Drive and six bridges that span the causeway. New curb and gutter with a raised median separating northbound and southbound traffic will narrow traffic lanes to calm high traffic speeds. The Capital City Trail will be moved further from the roadway with the addition of three new bridge structures, increasing pedestrian safety and greenspace along the corridor. The trail will also be widened, increasing the capacity of the trail, with separate paths for bikes and foot traffic.

- A temporary “ALL WAY STOP” condition has been installed at the intersection of S Bedford St and North Shore Dr. This will remain in place until all work in the Broom St intersection is complete.
Pedestrian/Bike Impacts
- Sidewalk along the southern side of Broom St is open between W Wilson St and the Brittingham Dog Park.
- The Capital City Trail remains open. No additional trail disruptions are anticipated until July of 2026. Cyclists are encouraged to dismount from their bikes when crossing active construction zones near S Broom St and North Shore Dr.
Waterway Impacts
- A navigable channel will be open for the duration of the project under the middle set of bridges. The channel has red and green buoys to aid navigation and regulatory buoys to delineate hazards. No other channels will be open and waterway users should avoid entering areas with active construction
Please be alert when traveling along the John Nolen Drive corridor. Please note that some work is dependent on weather and may be subject to change. Thank you in advance for your patience throughout this project.
