Help Improve the Use of Education Resource Officers in Madison High Schools

The Madison Metropolitan School District’s Board of Education is creating an Ad Hoc Committee to review and improve the use of Education Resource Officers in our high schools. We are committed to having an open, inclusive and transparent process for this endeavor. In order to make sure that there are diverse perspectives, we are inviting community members who are interested in being selected for this committee to submit a brief statement which addresses the following questions.

Why are you interested in serving on this committee, and what strengths or experiences will you bring to this committee?

In what ways are you involved or connected with our high schools? Do you have a child or youth who is currently attending, or has recently attended, or will soon attend one of our high schools?

As plans come together, are there any groups or community members that you have experience working with in regard to doing community outreach? Are you comfortable speaking with others and sharing information at public events or listening sessions?

We are also requesting that any interested individuals make a strong commitment to doing the critical work needed to make a plan that works for all students. This committee will meet for approximately one year at least once a month. The Ad Hoc Committee will have the first meeting in February of 2017 with selected individuals being notified at the beginning of January. Prior to our meetings, there will be work that will also need to be completed in order to be prepared for our discussions. It is extremely important that potential applicants understand and be prepared to fulfill these commitments.

In conclusion, this Ad Hoc Committee will focus on creating an inclusive and deliberative process that would be guided by the following six priorities:

  • Review existing MMSD data, federal and local guidance, contracts and policies related to Education Resource Officers
  • Review current research on the use and effectiveness of Education Resource Officers and/or School Resource Officers
  • Review best practices related to Education Resource Officers and/or School Resource Officers from other districts and locales
  • Develop possible recommendations for amendments to contract language and board policy based on feedback from the community in regard to our discussions, information-sharing sessions and monthly meetings
  • Exchange input and feedback with the working committee before their recommendations on policy and contract language are forwarded to the Board for consideration
  • Report to the Board of Education a summary of the work of the Committee on the Education Resource Officers in MMSD

We look forward to hearing from those interested in serving on this vital committee. Please respond by Friday, January 20, 2017.
