Mid-week Round Up

Landlords threaten to not move everyone on August 15th, 10 year rule claims another victim, reserve your park shelter, bed bugs, Kenton Peter’s hotel, help paint new Willy St. mural, DOT under fire, T Wall comes in last for Village Trustee but wants to run against Feingold?, and finally, go see the Raiders! (positive youth story)

HOW IS THAT A THREAT?
Um, go ahead. Wouldn’t it be better for tenants and the community if everyone didn’t move on August 15th. And, what happened to the Apartment Association’s position that bad landlords should be dealt with because they give all landlords a bad name. That’s how they supported the Chronic Nuisance Ordinance, isn’t this the same? Dealing with landlords who confiscate tenant property and illegally evict people seems to be a good thing.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
Yesterday was Jon Standridge’s last day on the Water Utility Board. Another outspoken voice falls victim to the 10 year rule. That’s what happens when you stand up for transparency and the public’s right to know. It’s a shame some people work so hard at thankless jobs and are unceremoniously discarded. Thanks Jon for everything you’ve done!

NASTY BED BUGS
This story just doesn’t seem to add up. How does a tenant who gets bedbugs after living in the same apartment for 25 years walk away with the impression that the only way the landlord will fix the problem is by raising the rent. And the landlord says they are just trying to give them a better apartment? Sounds goofy to me.

On a side note, the bed bug calls seem to be increasing again at the Tenant Resource Center . . . it usually happens when a few landlords aren’t taking care of the problems, then tenants start moving out, and moving the bugs with them. Ugh . ..

KENTON PETER’S HOTEL
I keep hearing about it, I was hoping to learn more in this article . . .

DOT UNDER FIRE
A judge has ruled that DOT did not adequately consider environmental, development (urban sprawl), or air quality impacts as well as the impact a road would have on the rural nature of the area.

Also interesting is that he ruled that the “open house” format of accepting public comments on projects was not “public” enough, and that citizens should be able to voice their opinions and concerns directly to DOT and in front of the rest of the public.

T WALL V. FEINGOLD
Really? Several people have contacted me to see my reaction. And mostly, I just giggle. A dude who can’t even get elected to the Maple Bluff Trustee position running for Senate. 4th out of 4 this past spring . . .

Jim Schuler 380 28%
Teri Bruns 373 28%
Peter Duff 351 26%
Terrance Wall 232 17%

You gotta admit, the guy has giant cahones. To match his giant checkbook, some say he’s willing to spend $10M of his own money to run . . . I guess, its his money to waste if he so chooses. It might be good for the local economy . . . if he spends it locally.

GO RAIDERS!
I got this email . . . which about says it all . . .
We all keep reading negative stories in the press about young people, mostly of

color, in some neighborhoods and how unsettling this is so some people.

What we don’t usually hear about are positive things that involve the same youth. The Southside Raiders is ayouth football program that is 40 years old now and it is a stabilizing force in the community. Most of the Raiders are young black men. The Raiders give them a chance to belong to a positive group, work together and learn a sense of responsibility. Wayne Strong, a police officer, and former alder Isadore Knox are directors of the program.

The Raiders have 5th, 6th and 8th grade teams that are all undefeated and all three teams play home games at Penn Park this Saturday.

8th Grade plays Monroe Red at 9:00 am
6th Grade plays Waunakee White at 10:30
5th Grade plays Monrow Red at 12:00

Please stop by and you will see something very positive for youth of color and talk to some of the parents about the future for our youth.
