Mayor Veto’s Unanimous Council Decision . . .

. . . to what end. It. was. unanimous. And guess what it is about . . . .

Pursuant to section 62.09(8)(c) and section 3.03(2), MGO, I return to you Legistar Item, 37018,

Amending Section 39.03 of the Madison General Ordinances to add homelessness as a protected class,

which I have vetoed and disapproved.

This matter has a number of administrative challenges not limited to, but including:

– Not properly noticed and prepared for Legistar,
– A greater need to assess the staffing costs to the Department of Civil Rights in the fiscal note,
– The impact on existing protected classes by the dilution of the impact on protecting a class where the nature of the classification is not always continuous.

Paul R. Soglin
Mayor
Dated this 9th day of June, 2015.

Geez, he’s making the John Strasser argument that prompted this open letter response. Doh!
