Dear Colleagues,

Good morning.

As you know, I’m stuck in Amsterdam while the airlines and the European Union figure out if it’s safe to fly through the volcanic ash from the Icelandic volcano that has a name even more incomprehensible then mine.

With me here at the Amsterdam Marriott are Janet Piraino, Dan McCormick, Tony Fernandez, Kathleen Falk, Susan Schmitz, Chris Fortune from Saris Cycling, Krista Rettig and Dean Gore from Trek, Jim Bradley from Home Savings, Al Fish from the UW and Alan Arntsen, Chair of the DMI Board.

We’ve set up a temporary office here at the hotel and my email and cell phone are functioning. Keeping in mind that we are seven hours ahead of you, we will try to keep as much of a regular schedule as we can. For example, this afternoon (morning in Madison) Janet and I will carry on our regular Monday staff meeting via Skype. Later in the day we’ll meet with Council leadership. And of course we’re keeping in close contact with the rest of the mayor’s office staff via phone and Internet.

We are currently booked on a flight home for Wednesday, but the situation is very much day to day, so we cannot be sure that that flight will actually happen. Unfortunately, I will miss Tuesday’s Council meeting, though I may try to tune in via the Internet. Best wishes on your leadership elections.

Feel free to email me with any business you might have. We hope to see you at home by the end of the week.

Dave

Seriously. It’s a compliment. For a guy who seems to disdain the laptop, I see this as a marked improvement.
