It’s FRIDAY! Round Up

Another week gone . . . chilly weather on the way . . . October is here.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF BEING IN A UNION?
I hate seeing them continue to make concessions . . . it seems there has to be a better way to deal with this, but fear has taken over. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a union supporter. Not always thrilled with the leadership of some of them, but I want them to be strong and do well. And the trend seems just the opposite, more and more concessions every day.

OH DEAR!
This would be fun to have city council and county board members do it . . . maybe we could work up some examples of what we might expect to find! 🙂

LOST OPPORTUNITIES IN THE TIF DEBATE
There were many. But Sconzie picks up on a few of them . . . good article!

OUCH!
That’s an awful endorsement. He’s a democrat so I have to vote for him. Note, not a word about his environmental record or any issues of importance. Maybe this is why the environmental credentials are not being touted by Black.

EVERY VOTE COUNTS, YES IT DOES
But how does the WSJ suggest that the voters get informed? With all the noise, how can you find the information you need on the candidates, instead of the propaganda? They don’t seem to be helping all that much.

LOVE THE WHO IS WORSE FOR WISCONSIN STUFF
Orton and Mills both follow up on the case for ignorance and incompetence. Who would vote for either of those clowns? I don’t get the psychology of voters sometimes. I hope reason prevails.

TIF, A TAX SUBSIDY
So says the supporters of the Edgewater. Yes, they used the word subsidy. (Well, until they read this and change it, they are decidedly off message!)

SSFC PROCESS GETS WEIRDER AND WEIRDER EVERY YEAR
Tenant Resource Center lost its funding from the students at the UW years ago and ever since, there really haven’t been tenant services on campus to the degree we provided them . . . and we lost our funding due to the ever changing rules . . . at some point, I think they need to remember, they are there to serve the students needs. Here’s some more of the lunacy.

DATA SHOW MADISON NOT DOING WELL – ECONOMICALLY
State Journal argues we should be focusing on Economic Development. Well, Duh. Of course, they mostly want high end jobs, not those for the average worker. But what is our Economic Development Commission focusing all its efforts on? The development process. That’s the Mayoral directed priority for them. Do they think the temporary jobs at the Edgewater solved everything? Here’s the latest on the “development process” issue:

On June 6th, Mayor Cieslewicz charged the Economic Development Committee(EDC) and staff with making recommendations regarding the review and approval of real estate development projects in the City. Since that time the EDC has received written suggestions and has heard public testimony on the development review process.

On October 6th Economic Development Division and Planning Division staff will make a presentation of recommendations to the EDC, Common Council and other development process reviewing commissions.

This is the new schedule:
The timeframe going forward:

Oct 6: EDC meeting for presentation of an outline of the draft report
Oct. 20 EDC meeting for presentation of the draft report
mid to late Nov: EDC meeting for presentation of final report to be forwarded to Council
Council would then send it out to various committees for comment

RETRO JOBS
Will the Common Council ignore their own laws and add a bar despite their own laws. They’ve been ignoring many of them lately, might it work for a bar? It worked for $16M for the Edgewater because jobs are important.

OTHER EFFECTS OF THE ECONOMY
More deaths in Wisconsin. I hope the State Journal takes a stand on this issue too.

FREAKFEST FAILURE
Ok, No.

CITY POLICE HORSES DAMAGE CARS
Oops.

DO YOU LIKE CORPORATE INFLUENCE IN ELECTIONS?
Do you agree with this?

RESOLVED, the City of Madison, Wisconsin, calls for reclaiming democracy from the corrupting effects of undue corporate influence by amending the United States Constitution to establish that:

1. Only human beings, not corporations, are entitled to constitutional rights, and

2. Money is not speech, and therefore regulating political contributions and spending is not equivalent to limiting political speech.

If so, you can help get it on the ballot!

4K GETTING REAL
Questions about how it will be funded still remain, but if 80% of Wisconsin can figure it out, I think we can.
More good info here.

DO YOU TRUST THE MEDIA?
I trust the State Journal reporters, not the editorial board. I often wish they had more space to explain things. I trust some Cap Times reporters, at least one mixes editorials with their news and that I find confusing. Sometimes I wish print media had more reporters so they could cover more and look into, instead of buy into, certain press releases. TV can’t give you a real story in the time they have. And the national media dumbs stuff down way too much. And the students papers . . . well, its hit and miss and you just never know. The beginning of the school year is always the worst. If you asked me about the media being biased as too liberal . . . no. Given Fox News, Wisconsin State Journal, AM talk radio and others . . . I’d say too conservative.

MONONA’S CDA EXCLUDES COUNCIL MEMBERS
Yup. They can. But do they have to? We have the same issue in Madison. They spend our money and we hardly ever question them . . . is this the way Monona, or Madison, should be doing business? I don’t think so, I think CDAs should be more open. They sound kind of like the Overture.

MAYOR ONLY HAS JOKES ABOUT KEN KRATZ
The Mayor is funny, most of the time. But sometimes, you want a serious answer. Why’d he shy away from this “slam dunk”?

EVERYONE’S FAVORITE ELEVATOR UPDATE
You know the one . . . in the Municipal Building, here’s the latest . . . not greatest.

As many of you know the MMB elevator has been down since Tuesday.

The latest information from our maintenance company is that the motor needs to be replaced. That motor has been delivered and will be installed Friday.

We hope to have the elevator back up and working soon, HOWEVER, for committees/commissions that are meeting next week at the MMB (2nd and 3rd floors), you should have a back-up meeting room in case the elevator is still not functioning next week.

And in general, the MMB elevator will probably continue to operate sporadically until we are able to complete the modernization project. This Public Works project will take several weeks to complete. We are working as quickly as possible to finish this project. We will update you on this project periodically.

Committee staff are encourage to hold their meetings at alternative locations. It is not required that you move out of 2nd and 3rd floor MMB, but encouraged – and you will need to be prepared to move the meeting if the elevator breaks down again.

Thank you for your patience.

There has to be a joke in there about a city that can’t make its elevator run. Especially when the top floor is the Economic Development Department . . .

I might have more to add in the next hour and a half before I run off to a meeting, but I wanted to get this posted, if I do, they will be listed here at the end.
