Immigration Issues Heating Up

A rally, city and county meetings all coming up in the next week or so!

So, here’s my show from this weekend on Immigration, the Sheriff and Ice with guests Shiva Bidar-Sielaff and Ramona Natera. I special thanks to them for coming in when there was so much going on! (Just ignore the error in the beginning where it says something about the Edgewater, I PROMISE, NO EDGEWATER!) If the embeded video below is not working, you can click here.

As for other things going on, here’s what I know at the moment.

SATURDAY, MAY 29TH

National Day of Action Against Arizona’s Racist Immigration Law! Madison, Presente!
Special Words from: Alder Shiva Bidar-Sielaff

What: A vigil to protest Arizona’s racist immigration legislation

When: Saturday, May 29th. 6PM.

Where: Dane County Building. 210 Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Why: National Day of Action. Madison will show its solidarity with the people of Arizona against the backwards, racist legislation being passed there! If we are silent, it is as if we do not exist.

No Sheriff Mahoney, we will not let you make Dane County into another Arizona!

Who: Immigrant Community and Allies. With testimony from the immigrant community members and special words from Jorge Carrera of the Immigrant Workers’ Union and Alder Shiva Bidar-Sielaff who will be introducing a resolution against Arizona’s racial profiling law 1070 and calling for comprehensive immigration reformat the next Common Council meeting on Tuesday, June 1, 6:30pm City-County Building Rm. 201. Also, words from Will Willams of Vets for Peace; Jessica Ruiz and Claudia Gonzalez of UTI Youth; and music by local artists among them Sandra Rybachek and others.

TUESDAY, JUNE 1st
There’s a facebook group here that you can join with great information about how you can support Alder Bidar-Sielaff’s resolution to end unjust immigration policies right here in Madison.

The Common Council will be considering her resolution (still by title only, but hopefully out soon) at their meeting. May be another late night!
NOTE: Here’s the link to the full resolution and supporting materials.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2nd
The Dane County Immigration Task Force will be having their meeting to finalize their report and determine what policy they should recommend (and the sheriff says he’ll ignore) about calling ICE for every person who was not born in the United States, even if they have identification.
