Streets department has this to say about our roads this morning.
ICY! VERY ICY!
All the precipitation we received during last evening and during the overnight hours was in the form of freezing drizzle and freezing rain. This resulted in coating all of our streets in a layer of thin ice.
Streets Division crews have been out salting our main arterials, main connector streets, Madison Metro Bus Routes and streets around the hospitals.
As of 6:00 am, the main arterials are in good winter driving condition as they are wet from the salt but slippery in spots. The secondary streets on our salt routes have also all been salted.
The residential streets where salt is not applied are icy and slippery. You can travel on them but care must be taken. Drive carefully; drive slowly and brake early and you should be fine until you get to a street that has been salted.
Crews have begun the sanding operations on our residential streets. We will be sanding the hills, curves and intersections in order to give traction on the icy residential streets. We will continue with the sanding operations until all streets are sanded, which should be by sometime this afternoon.
CLEAR YOUR SIDEWALKS
The snow and freezing rain that started to fall on Sunday, January 27, 2013 stopped after midnight. All snow and ice that accumulated from this event shall be removed the public sidewalks by 12:00 noon on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.
