How Much is in Candidate Campaign Warchests?

I took a look at what people had in their campaign accounts coming in to the 2020 Spring Elections for Madison City Council, Madison School Board and Dane County Board of Supervisors – for those who had campaign accounts in 2019.  Here’s what I found.I’ve also updated the information here (CountySchool Board and City.)

BACKGROUND

When are reports due?

The next campaign finance reports are due 1/15/2020 and then we will find out what candidates raised this past fall and early winter.  The reports will cover 7/1/19 – 12/31/19.  Pre-primary reports will be due on February 10, 2020 (covers 1/1-2/3) and pre-election reports will be due on March 30, 2020 (covers 2/4-3/23 if primary or 1/1-3/23 if no primary). Final campaign reports won’t be due until July 15, 2020 (Covers 3/24-6/30).

How much do campaigns cost?

Aldermanic races with opposition can cost $8,000-14,000.

School Board races can cost about $20,000

Dane County Board races are hard to know, we rarely see races with 2 or more candidates running during the full spring cycle, but I would expect them to be similar to the Alder races.

DANE COUNTY BOARD

This report is as of Thursday, January 2nd, 5 days before the filing deadlines.  And about 2 weeks before reports are due for the July – December 2019, for candidates that opened accounts in 2019.  The candidate information is based on last available clerk’s report at 3:04 on 12/30 and may have changed since this was posted.

NOTE:  Several candidates have failed to file reports, many just file “no activity” or are “exempt” (won’t spend or raise over $1,000).  Several haven’t raised money since 2016, one since 2014. Only two candidates have over $3,000.  So, incumbents in these cases don’t have large “warchests” ready to fend off challengers.  They seem pretty comfortable that no one will challenge them and several haven’t seen a contested election in many years . . . if ever.
