TODAY NOON – Homeless Services

In light of the ‘No Trespassing’ ordinance going into effect at the City County Building, many service providers are concerned about safe and legal places to be for homeless individuals to be who previously found the space to be a safe location outdoors when not able to access emergency shelter.

This topic will be added to our discussion on tomorrow’s agenda, and I wanted to share with you and appreciate your help contributing to this dialogue. If you are not able to attend this meeting and would like to provide input and be a part of subsequent discussion about this matter, please email Karen Andro at kandro@fumc.org or call 608-338-0320.

TODAY NOON – Sit-in

Recently the Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin has taken it upon himself to make the homeless in the area unwelcome. The seating where the downtown homeless and hungry have gathered as a community have been removed. This is also the location where the Libertarian Party of Dane County has previously provided free meals as a part of Food Not Bombs.

As a follow up to the seating being removed, an Ordinance was enacted that prevents anyone from sitting or lying in one place for more than an hour. This move is directly with regards to and has been enforced against those attempting to find a safe place to rest during the day. The homless who gathered downtown have been forcibly removed from any place they have gathered.

Join us as we Sit-In on the City Council steps as a direct protest against this abuse. The Ordinance provides a loophole for those who are in attendance or observation of a demonstration, so if you wish to disobey the orders please feel free to bring a political book which you may read separately as a way to signal your non-compliance.

TOMORROW 7:00 – Day Center Neighborhood Meeting

Neighborhood Meeting Regarding the Future site of a Permanent Homeless
Day Resource Center
Wed, 7-Oct-2015, 7:00 pm (2:00 hrs)

Date: Wednesday, October 7, 2015 – 7:00 p.m.
Meeting Location: Messner building – 1326 E. Washington Avenue

Dane County has an accepted offer to purchase the 19,000 square foot Messner building at 1326 E. Washington Avenue as the future site of a permanent homeless day resource center, contingent on City and County approvals. The center is intended to be part of an overall system to link individuals to community resources and to move people as quickly as possible from homelessness or near homelessness to employment and permanent housing. The center, if approved, would provide for basic needs such as private, accessible showers; storage space for personal items; laundry facilities; and space to stay cool and keep warm, etc. The offer to purchase will need to be approved by the Dane County Board and they will need to receive a conditional use approval from the City Plan Commission and, likely, approval by the City Urban Design Commission. If approved, Dane County plans to open the comprehensive day resource center in October 2016.
