Friday, Monday, Tuesday Morning Round Up

Slackin’ on the round up again . . .

WOW, THIS IS JUST WRONG
In. so. many. ways.

CAN WE REALLY LIVE WITHOUT ALL THOSE STATE EMPLOYEES?
I don’t think we’re doing so well. Is the best it will get?

NOT LARRY
But yet another state worker. Interesting. Was this part of the deal over the train station?

NO FREE MULCH
At least for a little while.

GOOD FOR THEM
Nice to see them resist the pressure. In fact, its awesome.

TAXI DRIVERS CAN’T HANDLE IT, BUS DRIVERS CAN?
Would you rather have a tired taxi driver, or a tired bus driver?

COME ON
WSJ crowing about the drop in Metro overtime for the last 6 months, when their article about the problem occurred in the past three months. And it doesn’t look at what has happened over the years for a comparison. Sloppy editorial facts as usual.

WSJ, UW EXCUSE MAKER
Why not just make all appointments “interim” for three years, it would just be so much easier for everyone, right? Note: You can see a similar trend in with our Mayor and his interim appointments.

CDA MAKES A GOOD CHOICE
I had heard months ago she was favored to get the job, glad to find out it was true, and slightly disturbed and concerned about the process. Natalie was one of the few developers that accepted the IZ concept and largely tried to make it work, she gets affordable housing. She also is decent to work with, good at explaining things, considers things fairly and generally sharp. And, the Mayor must have had nothing to do with this hiring, its a freaking woman! Seriously, I think its a good choice, even if I don’t always agree with what she’s about to do.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE MERGER TALK?
That’s right, its hooey, they should know that by now. Case in point, County funds TWO mental health programs, not ONE. And they are saving money doing it thanks to the hard work of more frugal non-profits who probably pay their employees less because they “share the pain” at a much greater level than county departments. And please note, this is an item on the Human Services agenda for tonight, would you have know that this was that item? I blew it on that one.

OOOPS.
It was a mistake (now that I’ve been caught). I shouldn’t have “saved” $20K by when transferring millions of dollars of property from one of my companies to another. Yeah, this guy would make a great governor. Not. You have that problem all the time, don’t you?

TRAFFIC REPORT INTERESTING
More likely to die in a traffic accident on the East side of Madison. Traffic counts on major streets in Madison down in past 5 years. Roundabout in top 2 intersections for crashes. Places where you’re likely to crash when not at an intersection, E Washington, E Washington and Willy St (the block my office is on, but also the Willy St. Coop.)

VOTE FOR FREE FRUIT AND NUTS TREES.
Wingra, Eagle Heights, Marlborough Park (Allied Drive) or Troy Gardens. Do it on-line. Do it today.

CAP TIMES ARTICLE ON THE “BROKEN” PROCESS”
I found this series of statements interesting:

“The Edgewater has become the poster child for how the process doesn’t work, which is unfair,” says Kerr.

Others have expressed concerns the Mayor is working to consolidate power within his office, shutting out citizen groups like the Plan, Urban Design or Landmarks commissions.

But Cooley says the effort is simply part of good government.

“As with any process, the one used in seeing a development through city land use approvals should be routinely reviewed and improved,” he says.

City business leaders tried to change the process in 2004 when the Economic Development Commission (EDC) issued a stinging report of the city development process.

Here’s a thought about the last part, perhaps, if the Economic Development Community wants things to change, they have to not only make proposals, but get an alder to sponsor them and then follow through on getting those items passed. Or maybe, they’re not that good of ideas in the first place. Do we really need to review the process again, 6 years later. Do we expect any different answers or results? And where is the praise for the things that have changed? The developers will never be happy until we just don’t regulate them at all, is that what we want for our community?

PRE-PAY FOR YOUR CAB?
Should we change the law for something that happens 2 to 3 times a month? Actually, they could do it now, if they did it for everyone. If its such a good idea, why not do it that way?

DID YOU ASK FOR YOUR WHITE PAGES?
Probably not.

WOULD YOU PLAY THIS VIDEO GAME?
If you’re reading this blog, you might be a government geek enough to get it for you kid! 🙂

HOMELESS KIDS
This could be part of the problem, statewide the number of homeless kids rose 105% in 6 years. In Madison, it rose 73%. No affordable housing problem here. Just look the other way.

BIKE BAIT WORKS?
UW Police found a way to cut down on bike thefts? Or people just don’t bother to report it cuz not much will be done about it. Or was it the Downtown Safety Initiative? I’m guessing the former.

Ok – that’s all I have time for this morning. Try again tomorrow.
