New Voting Procedures for February 21 Primary

Voters will show ID and sign the poll book

New election laws will be fully implemented for the February 21 Primary Election.

State law now requires voters to present identification when voting. The law is very specific about which forms of ID will be accepted:
• Wisconsin driver’s license expiring 11/2/10 or later
• Wisconsin DOT-issued photo ID card expiring 11/2/10 or later
• U.S. passport expiring 11/2/10 or later
• Military ID card expiring 11/2/10 or later
• Certificate of naturalization issued within last 2 years
• Unexpired Wisconsin driver’s license or state ID receipt from the DMV
• ID card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe in Wisconsin
• Unexpired ID issued by a Wisconsin accredited university or college-must contain issuance date, student signature, and expiration date within 2 years of issuance-along with proof of current enrollment.

Voters who do not have an acceptable ID will need to vote on a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots will be counted only if the voter presents an acceptable ID to the Clerk’s Office by 4 p.m. the Friday after the election.

Voters will be required to sign the poll book before receiving a ballot. Voters who are unable to sign the poll book because of a physical disability are exempt from the signature requirement.

Voters may still register to vote at their polling place on Election Day, but will no longer be able to use a corroborating witness to prove their address. A document showing the voter’s name at his or her current address must be used to prove residency. The following documents are acceptable forms of proof of residence:
• Current and valid Wisconsin driver’s license or state ID card
• Property tax bill
• Residential lease
• Utility bill
• Bank statement
• Paycheck
• Government check or government document

The law now requires that voters live at an address for at least 28 consecutive days immediately preceding the election, with no present intent to move. Voters who move within 28 days of an election will need to vote at the polling place for their previous address.
