Election Day Voter’s Guide – Common Council (Finished, For Now)

Brenda’s picks, predictions, candidate websites, endorsements, election night parties and more . . . for those of you who are going to call or text or email me and ask me what to do, here you go! 🙂 With my apologies for this not quite being complete! Still filling in a few links as I find more info and just plain ran out of time..

Here’s where you find out where to vote if needed.

CITY COUNCIL

DISTRICT 1
I’d dual endorse in this race only because I like Philip. However, Lisa Subeck is sure to run away with this one. Running a race takes more than a nice person who knocks on doors, it also takes money to really get out and reach voters who you might not reach at home. Thanks to Philip for running, we need more candidates all the time in every race. It’s what keeps people on their toes and gets ideas into public discussion. However, Subeck gets it right at least 80% of the time if not more like 90% of the time. I disagree on some things, but after working with her for years, I”m comfortable working with her and knowing what to expect, even when there is a klinker every once in a while.

DISTRICT 2
I’ve been backing Ledell Zeller since day one. She clearly has the most experience and has been around and will be around, instead of people who come and go in our neighborhoods. I”m really kind of frustrated with being represented by people who don’t represent the district. Check this out.

Endorsed by Alders/Supervisors of surrounds districts: Zellers = 5, Post = 0
Endorsed by current or former Neighborhood Assoc. Presidents: Zellers = 9, Post = 1
Endorsed publicly by District 2 residents and small business owners: Zellers = 373, Post = 12
Plus, 69% of posts contributions come from the Chamber of Commerce, developers and others outside District 2, 17% is self financed, only 14% comes from inside the district.

I hope people are paying attention to who is paying to elect our elected officials. District 2 needs Ledell Zellers to represent the people who live here.

This one is too close to call, but I’m going with Zellers, given the TLNA support that I didn’t have with David Wallner and others who supported Maniaci, but are not supporting Post.

I sat next to Lauren Cnare on the City Council, we agreed on very little. Nice person, I called her the “Council Mom”, but I”m looking for someone who is good on the issues, represents their constituents instead of special interests and who actually understands poverty issues.

Unfortunately, if I have to predict, I think this one is closer than people think, but I think Cnare wins.

Hands down, Marsha Rummel. I also consider Scott a friend, but we just don’t agree on many, many things. Rummel has a tough district, very active, lots of issues, lots of work and she handles it as well as anyone I know. She followed in tough shoes with Judy Olson and has performed admirably. Plus, she’s the most progressive person on the council! Hard work, great politics, its a clear, clear choice!

And she will win. The crappy mailings in the district put the nail in that coffin.

I’m going with Leslie Peterson for the endorsement and the win. This one is a close one in terms of who wins, while Palm is an incumbent, he is in a different district after redistricting and they don’t know him as well – which actually might work in his favor. Larry’s term on the city council has been mostly noted for . . . not much – so the endorsement isn’t really close at all. Plus, I’m just disappointed he couldn’t even be bothered to fill out the Affordable Housing Action Alliance survey when he is on the Homelessness Issues Committee and the point person on housing on the council. Sigh. Peterson brings energy, a progressive voice that won’t get lost and she also works really hard. It’s a theme, but that is what I like in the candidates I endorse!

I’m going with Zach Madden on the endorsement, another clear choice! Mark my words, if he doesn’t win today, we will see him again. District 13 was very lucky to have two young people (Damon Terrell lost in the primary) running for office that were rock stars. Sadly, I think Ellingson pulls this one off, but again, it will be closer than she would like. Ellingson has been a HUGE disappointment on housing, again because she serves on the CDA and hasn’t really shown any interest in housing, despite having quite a bit of low-income, actually affordable housing, in her district.

Well, call me a coward, but I’ll pass on this one as well. Neither candidate gave me much to work with. Bruer is a bully many fear, but he’s just that, a bully. Strasser has been described as “an empty suit”. Sorry District 14, good luck. At this point, you’re probably in a better position with Bruer, the city is probably better with Strasser.

I actually have no clue who wins, haven’t spent any time in the district. I’m guessing Bruer.

HAWK! Wow, this one has been hard, I have some very good friends who are strong Ahrens supporters. I just can’t help want candidates that are brave and stand up for what they believe in and Hawk has a huge track record with me (smoking ban and paid sick leave and maybe even local minimum wage) He stood up, as a business owner, in support of these ideas, even when it wasn’t popular with his colleagues. Plus, he knows what he doesn’t know and works hard to find answers, he thinks about issues and comes to his own conclusions. He’s got my support!

Too close to call on the win – but again, I haven’t spent any time in the district, just based on what I’m hearing.

I don’t know Spencer, at all, even tho he has run several times. So, I’ll take a pass on this on. Politically, I don’t agree with Joe on much, but that doesn’t mean I would agree with Spencer either. Burned by too many big tent democrats that turned out way to conservative to make an endorsement here. Again, mostly because I just don’t know Spencer White.
