Early Monday Morning Round Up

For the third workday in a row, I have a meeting 8am or before . . . this just has to stop! It interferes with my blogging! Here’s the relevant things I have for this morning . . .

JOIN A COMMITTEE
OK, I ripped this off from Alder Rhodes-Conway, it just easier to wait for her to compile it. Too bad the Mayor’s Office can’t make their reports more user friendly!

Do you want to apply to serve on a City Committee?

More information on City Committees is here.
If you’re interested, you can fill out an application here.
A list of vacancies is here.

Right now, there are vacancies on the following committees:

ADA Transit Subcommittee
Community Development Block Grant Commission (low income rep)
Commission on People with Disabilities
Disabled Parking Enforcement Assistance Council
Early Childhood Care and Education Committee
Economic Development Commission (bio tech rep)
Committee on the Environment
Equal Opportunities Commission
Long Range Transportation Planning Committee
Parking Council for People with Disabilities
Sustainable Design and Energy Committee
Zoning Board of Appeals

I’ve been a part of many discussions about whether to apply or not apply since the general impression is that is will be a waste of time and that committee work with be ignored. I disagree. Get appointed, raise hell and then expect not to be reappointed. Make your three years count!

CITY BUDGET, RTA AND A LITTLE THING CALLED . . . (YUP, I MISSED A BIGGY!)
School Budget! If you aren’t at Board of Estimates, or the joint meeting of Public Works & Transportation/Personnel & Finance you might want to be at the School Board meeting. I believe they will be passing the MMSD Budget and tax levy. It’s nights like tonight I need a team of bloggers! Volunteers? Anyone? Oh, the choices, TiVo and I can only cover so much!

GET RID OF YOUR HAZARDOUS WASTE TODAY!
No, not your elected officials . . . 🙂

Clean Sweep Household Hazardous Waste Season Ending
Saturday, October 31st is Last Day of the 2009 Clean Sweep Program

MADISON, WI-October 23, 2009 – The Dane County / City of Madison Clean Sweep Program for recycling household hazardous waste will end its 2009 season on Saturday, October 31st. Items that can be dropped off at Clean Sweep include oil based paints, pesticides, poisons, household products containing organic solvents, ignitable, aerosols, and non-automotive type rechargeable batteries.

For the final day, all traffic will be routed to the Badger Road driveway behind the Dane County Highway garage. Customers will be directed to drive through the facility and remain in their cars while the products are unloaded. The Product Exchange will be closed for this event. Customers with large loads will be directed to a parking stall for unloading. A large turnout is anticipated, so there may be delays. The Clean Sweep staff highly recommend that the public stop by prior to 31st.

We are no longer accepting business, municipal or agricultural appointments for the 2009 season.

Normal hours of operation are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The site is located at the Dane County Highway garage, 2302 Fish Hatchery Road in Madison. Prior to the last Saturday the site can be accessed by following the signs on Fish Hatchery Road or on West Badger Road. It is important to drop off household hazardous waste during the listed hours of operation. Leaving materials at the site when it is closed is illegal and can lead to a $2,000.00 fine.

CRASH!
From one of the listserves I’m on. I found this interesting:

2007- 157,000 auto accidents in Wisconsin
percent resulting in injury 31.73%
percent resulting in fatality 0.40%

2,895 Motorcycle accidents
percent resulting in injury 38.50%
percent resulting in fatality 3.86%

1,169 Bicycle accidents
percent resulting in injury 95.29%
percent resulting in fatality 1.11%

626 School Bus crashes
percent resulting in injury 29.23%
percent resulting in fatality 0.64%

Not quite sure what this says about the safest mode of transportation. But it was thought provoking.

IT IS ABOUT FREAKING TIME
Less cops! And less people . . . but at least we won’t be paying for all that overtime!

HAVE YOU FOUND IT YET?

And, email your alder, ask them to support the amendment to the budget to give WYOU you are paying for in your cable bill . . . don’t let the city re-appropriate your money! Make sure it goes to WYOU!!

SANBORN NEW TARGET
Somehow I think this is funny . . . how’d Sanborn become the target? This is the second editorial.
