Recommendation on Jail Planning
Dane County has spent many years and considerable dollars studying the future of the Dane County Jail currently located in three facilities. The time has come to move forward.
1. Public Protection & Judiciary recommends approval of Option 3 Phase 1 Jail remodel to be part of the 2018 county budget.
2. PP&J also recommends that Dane County approve Option 3 Phase 2 by 2023.
3. During the upcoming planning process, PP&J recommends continued review of all aspects of Option 3 Phase 1 to determine if there is any way in person visitation for all inmates can be included prior to Phase 2.
4. PP&J further recommends that during the planning process, the chaplains, teachers and others doing invaluable work with the inmates in the jails be consulted to help insure that the final design maximizes effectiveness of all program space.
5. PP&J further recommends that overall reform of the criminal justice system being undertaken by the Criminal Justice Council and others proceeds as rapidly as possible to divert ndividuals from the criminal justice system. This includes moving forward with best practice advancements to assist those with alcohol, drug and mental health challenges to enhance quality of life for all.
