Catching Up with the Round Up . . . (Part 1)

As I struggle to use all the vacation that I have before I lose it, I have more time off today . . . on my day off yesterday I worked three hours, so I have three hours this morning to waste, but I’m sitting at my desk and still working here and there . . . anyways, here’s what I have . . .

AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN SHOREWOOD HILLS?
Oh my! And the opponents did not disappoint, they brought up their concerns about the need for increased police services. Turns out, this is likely more market rate housing since they are using tax credits and it typically isn’t that affordable. And, I don’t think I need to point out to my readers low income does not equal crime.

LOW INCOME BUS PASS AND IMMIGRATION ISSUES
Oh dear, has it boiled down to this? I’m hoping there was more to this discussion than what was reported there.

MONKEY LOVE
20 County Board Supervisors jump into the fray. Another article here. And here the Cap Times gets a little more info on the thoughts behind the letter.

THAT DAMN WYNDHAM
Lukas’ response was a good one. I enjoyed the line about self-promotion and insider relationships.

HATERS
Check out the first comment on this story about Progressive Dane hosting a forum for school board candidates. Seriously, that’s all you got? If you’re going to be critical then say something relevant.

SERIOUSLY?
I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to staff insult my former constituent over how easy it is to know when to alternate side park and the rules are simple and they just don’t care if they get a ticket. I think, there is a fair amount of confusion. Apparently, yesterday, staff fell victim to their own claims, check this out!

Yep, just that easy. Ironically, as I was typing that, this came in:

Yeah, right . . . I’m not sure I trust you . . . 🙂

OH BOY, HERE WE GO AGAIN
Actually, this train wreck could be fun to watch . . . kudos to Captain Schauf for having some common sense! Let just hope that is the prevailing attitude from the police department.

WSJ, TAKING A STAND FOR SCHOOLS
Most important race this spring? Nice. I’m surprised they didn’t jump on the conservative band wagon and spout off all the crazy talking points about county board instead. How odd. And, by the way, if Farley had gotten more signatures instead of trying to round them up at the last minute in the hallway, this would have never been an issue. How hard can it be to get 200 signatures, only 100 were required.

STUPID CITY, THIS WEEK
Well, actually it was last week. We’re doing some work at the Social Justice Center, moving and building some internal walls to change some suite configurations. While getting the permits, which were held up for three days over this issue, we were told all the suite designations have to change, even the ones with no work being done. First of all, instead of them being letters, we have to have numbers for the post office. So, we changed that, and the mail that has been delivered hasn’t been right since then. Apparently in an attempt to give us better service, they’ve just screwed it up . . . but that’s not the story, I digress. Additionally, they have a numbering system that makes it so that the suites in our office are now suites 101, 102, 106, 107 and 109. Our conference room is room 104. Our building isn’t that big, so it shouldn’t be that confusing, but how the hell are people supposed to find where they are going with that kind of a numbering system? And hey, do they want to pay for everyone’s new letterhead, envelopes, business cards etc? What are they trying to do, use this to stimulate the economy? The official explanation, in case you are wondering, is that the fire department wanted the numbers this way, evens on the left, odds on the right and numbers ascending south to north. Like I said, I’m so glad I don’t have to explain this stupid shit on behalf of the city any more and I’m glad I’m my own landlord and don’t need to tell this to the tenants.

TURNED THE ANONYMOUS COMMENTS OFF
I have low tolerance for trolls who can’t stay on topic, have twisted logic and no regard for facts. I didn’t have comments on my blog for quite some time, to avoid dealing with it. I like the comments, I just don’t want someone monopolizing the comments and driving people nuts, like the madison.com stuff. If you want to comment, go get an id at OpenID or google. Its not that hard and that way the anonymous people, (yes, you can still be anonymous by having a screen name) won’t get confused. I’ve struggled with that decision and may change my mind, but that’s the decision for today.

SAVE THE LIBRARY MURAL!
Um . . . that’s my opinion. Hmm . . . where should it go . . . They are looking for your opinions, tonight!

CYNICAL VIEW OF TONIGHT’S IMMIGRATION HEARINGS
Tonight they are holding hearings about people’s experiences with the sheriff’s department policy on immigration. The link gives some background and a perhaps, rightly so, cynical take on what will happen tonight. Here’s the details.

In May of 2009, the Dane County Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution 14, 09-10 to create a task force charged with examining issues related to immigration and access to County services. The specific task force duties are the following:
· Insure that Dane County complies with the federal requirements of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
· Improve relations between Dane County law enforcement and the immigrant community; and
· Work with the National Association of Counties to identify examples from other counties throughout the country regarding approaches to improve relations between the criminal justice system and the immigrant community

The Task Force is composed of nine members representing a range of community interests including members of the immigrant community and faith community, as well as representatives of the criminal justice system, schools, and public health, all appointed by the County Board Chair.

As part of its work, the Task Force is interested in hearing first-hand testimony from members of the community on the question: What barriers do you have that prevent you from obtaining services through the county, such as:

* Obtaining assistance related to employment issues or benefits
* Obtaining social services including health benefits and Medical Assistance
* Requesting assistance from the Dane County Sheriff’s Department

The Task Force will hold listening sessions to obtain testimony on this matter:

– Wednesday, 2/10/10 from 5:30p.m. to 6:30p.m. at the Catholic Multicultural Center, 1862 Beld St., Madison.
– Monday, 2/15/10 from 5:30p.m. to 6:30p.m. at the Middleton Public Library, 7425 Hubbard Ave.,Middleton.
– Monday, 3/10/10 from 6:30p.m. to 7:30p.m. at the Stoughton Firestation, 401 E. Main St., Stoughton.

Please assist us by encouraging and assisting members of the community to attend this meeting. Further information regarding future meetings and locations will be provided at a later date.

VOLUNTEERS WILL PROVIDE INTERPRETER SERVICES
