Capitol Watch: Wisconsin the New Arizona?

The all republican capitol is sure to set the state back centuries . . . so I’m starting a new Capitol Watch feature to point out my outrage of the day. There will be many, I had to choose one for today. Should Wisconsin be the new Arizona when it comes to immigration policy?

From the ACLU:

New legislative leaders are already calling for a “show us your papers” racial profiling law for Wisconsin. Legal challenges in Arizona have cost the state nearly one million dollars and courts are not supportive. We need to encourage people statewide to say no to an Arizona-style racial profiling law.

11.10.10 | Newsmakers: Rep. Don Pridemore

Republican Rep. Don Pridemore wants Wisconsin to follow Arizona’s lead and require officers with a “reasonable suspicion” that someone arrested or charged with a crime is here illegally to determine whether that is true. In a Newsmakers interview on Nov. 10, Pridemore said the bill he will introduce in the legislative session that begins in January would jail the suspected illegal immigrant for 48 hours. After that, if they have not produced documents proving they are in the country legally, officers must contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and turn the illegal immigrant over to them. Pridemore’s bill would also repeal the City of Madison’s “sanctuary” ordinance and allow local governments to ask those jailed to pay for their care.

The sheriff’s dream . . . . oh, wait, he won’t even wait 48 hours, you know, for safety purposes.
