Bus Stop Voter Registration!

More volunteers needed . . . League of Women Voters and City Clerks office is registering people at bus stops . . .. the process to get qualified to do so it outlined here as well. Remember, there is only one week to get people registered! Starting yesterday . . .

This was a triple forward, but here’s all three messages.

Would you or any of your co-workers be willing help register voters at bus stops? You would need to be trained first, but the training isn’t very time-consuming. If you are interested, see the messages below and the attached flyers. Note that this is a non-partisan activity.

Do you know any people who work downtown or out at DOT who might possibly do voter registration at bus stops on their lunch hour or after work. It’s a nonpartisan activity and all you really need are the forms, a pen, and a clip board! If interested, contact Gail Bliss of the LWV at the phone number or email address at the bottom of this message. Anyone doing this would need to become a Special Registration Deputy, but that is easy to do by visiting the Madison City Clerk’s office to get trained and to get a SRD number (just don’t go there on election day – they would be much too busy). You don’t have to live in Madison to be a SRD here. If people also wanted to be a SRD for Middleton, they would have to do that through the Middleton City Clerk. People who currently work at the polls would still need to get the SRD training and a number, but they would have a head start on knowing how to register people, etc. It’s important to register voters during the open period because proof of residence is not required during this brief period and some people just don’t have the required proof.

Subject: Bus stop voter registration help needed May 9 – 16

From the League of Women Voters:

Dear colleagues – The League of Women Voters of Dane County (LWVDC) is running an ad campaign on Madison Metro buses in conjunction with the city clerk’s office. We would love to have voter registration workers at the transfer points, but Metro has rejected that plan. Their concerns are safety and precedent related. SO, we would like to run voter registration stations on the sidewalks near each of the transfer points, and at heavily used bus stops. I wish I’d thought of this sooner, but are there any groups out there who would like to adopt a sidewalk near a transfer point? Weekdays 3-6 should reach the majority of homeward bound commuters. To volunteer for a shift or to sponsor a site contact me. If you know of other groups that may be interested, please forward this e-mail and copy me.

Weekend hours are most likely to reach voters without other transportation options. With bus dependent voters, voter ID could be a future problem. The LWVDC has funding to assist people in obtaining birth certificates and other documents needed to get WI photo ID from the DMV. Any time you register someone who does not have a DOT ID number, please refer them to LWVDC for help with getting a state ID. Have clients call the League office 232-9447. (See attached photo ID flyer)

Registrars who are double qualified in Madison and Middleton are especially wanted for University Avenue at University Bay Drive and University Avenue on the UW campus areas.
